rb25 vrs sr drivability..

ive never driven a rb25, only riden. Ive owned a tuned sr, and im curious about the differance in how the vehicles drive. Basically, RB + swap mods vrs SR + fmic, cams, exhaust, etc.

RB = Potentiometer
SR = On / Off switch

thats the best way i can put it. basically an RB the power is always there and ready for delivery. the SR is kind of like Vtec. u gotta wait for the turbo to spool to feel some power. I had both blacktop S13 SR20, RB20 and RB25.

perfect..is there a huge driving differance between the 20 and the 25 once modding incurs? The $1000-1200 differance in price makes me want to lean toward the rb20...

No RB20 isnt worth it because finding parts for it is a pain in the ass. No point of having 6 cylinders if it has the same potential as an SR20. Go RB25, it'll better serve you once you starting hitting over 400hp.

other option : $$$/Whp

2JZ-GTE 3.0 L LESS Lag...500-700 Rpm less lag

Built 2.0L Sr

Built 2.4L KADE (Cheapest Route)

LSx Swap ( expensive ) But 400Whp N/a Is Worth it...

dunno but if i'm gonna "upgrade" I'll upgrade to somthing worth it...

2jz's are really damn expensive, and id think theyre a bit bigger (as far as taking up engine bay space wise). is there a 5spd that can attach to a 2jz? can you put on a 2j head onto a 1j block? this is really rabbit trailing, but i like this thread.

i had an RB20 it held fuckin great. and the lag wasn't too bad with a big single (holset HX35) you can rev the living shit out of those engines with valve train mods. i say the RB20 is really worth it. if you arent planing to go 500WHP or above (tranny starts giving problems and need to swap out for an RB25 trans) but for a street car, shit RB20 > SR20 all day. sure SR20 parts are more common but the RB20 has allot of parts cross reference to US cars Water pump, Timing belt, oil pump, main and rod bearings are RB specific (20.25.26 are the same) but phase2 carries them as well as enjuku racing. you can even talk to otis about it, he loves RB20's prolly more than I do.

I have an RB25 Series II in my 97 SE and it is a torque monster, you can shift it way early and it just pulls and pulls. It's pretty much power on tap, still having excellent spool characteristics with the stock BB turbo.

I have also driven a 95 with an S14 SR and ball-bearing T-28 at 15psi. On city streets, the SR felt pretty wimpy until boost hit (which you wouldn't even do much in city driving unless you were trying to). On the freeway though, it was a rocket since boost was so close at hand and it was light as shit.

I'd say go for the 25, it will definitely put a smile on your face everytime you drive it. It's hilarious how the sound of the motor makes every head on the street turn when you roll by too. But yes, it will cost more and sourcing parts will take some effort on your part.
