Quick diff question....help me please.

This is a quick question that some might think is dumb...if so, flame me I dont care. I searched, and posted in the thread I found, but no one responded. So here one more time is my question.

I need to put my welded diff back together and was wondering if you need to pack the bearings or just use gear oil only. I was positive you would only use gear oil, but then my neighbor said something about having to pack them first and then put them in packed + gear oil. Now I am second guessing myself, and am unable to find a solid answer. What can happen if you pack bearings that do not need it? .....nothing bad right? Thanks guys.

measure backlashing or it'll f*ck up.

Use BrakeQuiet.

alright I will have to check into that, your the first to mention it. I just thought I would be able to reverse the process and install the way removed with all the shims and everything.

if installed with too much/little backlash, you can easily mash up the ringgear with the pinion(?) [the one that is actually connected to the driveshaft]

And make your diff EsPLODE!
