Sticking speedometer

My speedometer gets stuck around 40 mph. Sometimes if I hit the dash really hard the speedometer well jump to the correct speed and sometimes it jumps to the correct speed and then back down to 40 mph. When I come to a complete stop the speedometer slowly goes to zero.

What could be the problem?

I have an S14. I figured that it was broken. Can it be fixed? What is the solution?

could be a broken gauge, but i would check all the wiring to it first, sounds like it could be a wire that is almost open. if the gauge itself is broken i think you are probably looking at a new one, never heard of anyone fixin them.

Can I replace just the speedometer or do I have to replace the whole cluster?

Just replace the entire cluster... it's easier anyway.
