what i'm wondering is how the book bag isn't in shreds and pieces scattered everywhere. the explosion killed people near by, but the bag is still somewhat intact.

i figured it would have been blown into pieces where it would blend in with all the debris...

It could be possible that it blew the zipper or some seam open and rode the explosion out.
