weird sr20 clicking noise
Ok I know I am constantly asking questions about my sr but the swap is complete and running good now... I just have one more weird issue. At idle there is a clicking noise sometimes near the vtc/tps/1st*injector. The click is completely random and does not match the revs and it only does it under 1k rpm. When it starts clicking it interrupts the idle and drops it to around 600. *** it doesnt do it when I unplug the tps or if the tps is adjusted UNDER .4 volts. Weird problems man.

if its a s14/15 motor, the VTC gear will start to rattle when they get old and worn out. might be the issue.

i remember my first tick.
Ah, I was at idle sitting in the driveway. VTC had not been on for a week because I had cut the wire to diagnose something else. The engine started softly at first. tick tick tick. It got louder. The car drove fine but the noise sounded like a rod knock now. tack tack tack clack tack. I freaked out. I called five places about a next engine. I was about to head down to a local place and pick one up when I remembered the VTC wire. Sigh. |

A mod to get rid of vvt sprocket rattle or check if it's the sprocket making the noise
is ground the yellow wire going to the vvt solenoid, just 'T' into it and to ground will do plenum support bolt is close and good earth/ground point when grounded/earthed you will get full oil pressure to the sprocket constantly you can run it like that to check if noise goes away but may notice loss of top end power after 5k revs another thing is the oil feed drilling for the sprocket in the head is tiny and it only needs a bit of engine crud to get in there and starve the pulley, a good working sprocket can start to rattle after 100>500miles if the oil feed is restricted if oil spray bars for the rockers are blocked with engine crud that's not a good sign regards the sprocket oil feed being clear and flowing oil |

One of the signs of a worn aging oil pump is the return of the VTC clacking at idle shortly after returning to idle. A nice mechanical oil pressure gauge will usually confirm the low oil pressure (often 7-9psi at idle) that accompanies the tick tick tick noise.
Note that there are two ticks. One is the solenoid when it turns on. That is not the noise I am referring to. You can turn this noise "off" by simply unplugging the solenoid. The other noise is a consistent tapping that sounds like a rod knock. That is the gear slapping around due to either low oil pressure, low oil feed, or worn out internal gear. |

Unplug one of the plugs on the iac. I think its the brown. Mine made a similar but not as loud sound and I found that if I unplugged it it went away. Replaced the iac and that fixed it

when i was adjusting the TPS on my s14 SR, i had a paperclip back-tapped into the middle wire for the TPS, and i swear i heard that same clicking as in the video when i'd play around with the paperclip while it was in the back of the harness plug. my clicking was not as fast as yours though. mine was a little more controlled. only clicked when i would move the paperclip a certain way. i felt like maybe i was shorting something? but the paperclip is just sitting in the back of the harness plug so that didn't make sense.
OP doesn't appear to get on here anymore, but i found him on facebook. let me know if you can't find him. vdub, update this when you figure it out. |
