Yes its sort of spiraled abit from the original 6 months off the road build I had planned. =P I cant say I'm unhappy the extent I've gone to far exceed what I had originally planned as well.
Its just the amount of patience required to do it this way and save up for all the bits is a bit mind bending. haha :P |

Another piece of the puzzle arrived this week. A delivery from Streeter which was nice. I haven't had one from him in awhile.
"Side generators" from garage mak. God knows why they're called that, supposed to generate side vortexes or something maybe? Anyways the plan is to mod the front guards/side skirts and let abit of air out the back of the wheel arches behind these. This all need to start soon so we can get it finished and get the rest of the bodywork painted once the weather has cooled down abit. These being the best solution I could come up with to be somewhat of an aero improvement and that I still like the look of. They'll be changed slightly to suit what I want. Let the composite itch begin. :P More soon! |

Cheers man yes getting married and buying/renovating houses in Sydney eats up all your free time and spare $$. You'll have to head over when WTAC is on one year! Planning on putting alot more time into this over the rest of the year. Very cool, cant wait to see your aero pieces for it |

So I haven't done a post in awhile. Here is a backlog of things I've been chipping away at.
Made this bonnet stay from a bunnings alloy mop handle and some rubber chair leg stops. Great for working on the car in the shed as you can place it anywhere you like and it doesn't mark the bonnet or the paintwork in the engine bay. Going to make another one of these for the boot once I get the hinges sorted out. I ended up looking into this NANOLEX product cause I'd heard good things about it. I've coated all 8 rims with the stuff. One thing I didn't foresee was yes no dirt should be sticking to the wheels but the wheel weights now dont want to stick either so I'll have to do something about that later on. It actually takes quite awhile to do cause all the wheels we're running have their fair share of spokes. Would have taken longer again had they already have been brake dusted. The motor had to come forward again cause I'd earlier forgotten to properly block off the CAS hole in the back of the head. Rather than taking it all out again I dropped the front end undone and rolled the car backwards off the engine/box. Had to borrow one of Jimmys slide hammers to get the new tail shaft back of out the gearbox. Both the shaft and box being new ment its a tight fit and didnt want to come back out. Fitted/drilled out the final hole for my oil relocation block. Now has 3 riv nuts and one M6 right through the rail. Its super solid, if there are ever any overly tight oil filters on it it'll be up to the task. Put all the fittings together and mounted it up to check it out. I'm happy as with how its turned out. Ready to work out exactly what fittings need to be bought for it now. Dump pipe assembly could go back on. The exhaust housing had been apart to get coated so that had to go back together as well. Had to clean up the threads cause the coating had got into them. Working out where to **** the housing to ment it had to go on/off and apart afew times. First time I've put all the gates piping on the car myself. It goes on relatively easily. Tight fit. Still need to spin the core around some more and work out what bits I need for the oil feed/filter Going to be a tight fit with turbo nut/oil feed clearance. The wheels now being coated ment I could put the 285 RSR's onto the enkeis and work out the exact fit. Pulled the bonnet off for a clean and to remove the old bonnet pins. Scrubs up ok Have some lockable aero catches around to put on once everything on the front end is lined up in its final positions. Wire brushed my factory hatch hinges to get all the surface rust off them. Gave them quite afew coats of this decent anti rust matt black spray paint. After fitting them I've realised one of the hatch riv nuts is slightly off so I'll have to drill it out a bit. Picked up my throttle body and wheel fresh back from being anodized Happy with how the contrasting colours came out. Super ricey but still looks tough (imho) :P The first of many upcoming trips to motorsport connections netted me this haul. -8 hard lines for running the fuel system up the car aswell as hardline for the brake lines. Tube cutter, tight radius bender for the brake lines, mounting brackets for everything and some speedflow vice jaws for assembly of fittings. The bender at work. Got some shots of in/around the brake master area. There is a decent amount of space to work with. The threads in the carbon hatch were fouled with resin so needed a tap run through them. More for reference than anything. This was borrowed I need to get myself some taps! The catch can with filter fitted. Stoked with how creative Mitch got with the use of space here Picked up some inconel turbo studs with locking nuts as well. Did a dummy fit of how I'm going to mount the vents I got the end result should look something like this but have much less behind it. I'm happy with how it looks just going to be abit of mucking around to get it finalised and glassed up. This is what I'm concentrating on atm so I can get it done and painted while its still cool weather. First measurements on the chopping the skirt. Test fit showed this wasn't enough to create a decent gap. Filing back the vents to a much more perfect gaps/straight edges. Before I had a second go at the skirt. |

So a decent size update on my project which never ends. I've been taking photos for a long time but haven't assigned the time to sit down and process/upload them all so here goes.
The side skirts had been chopped up to fit the new shape I wanted I had to make new ends for them. I used one of the test pieces of fiberglass I'd made earlier in testing and cut two flat plates trimming and sanding them them as closely as possible to the shapes of the gaping holes left in the skirts. Also trying to match them side to side which is harder than it sounds. Installed this ebay special billet rack bush. This is way less ****ting that the other one I had in here which used all these factory bits. Now much neater. So the next step was to tape the plates on with masking tape. The tape shape itself becoming the mould. Nice and comprehensive so not to get resin leaking through which I then need to try and sand off. I pre chopped up a bunch of chopstrand and wet it all out with some resin the corners were **** you really need to tear bits off and dab it in. On the other side I pulled apart the chop strand mat which worked much better. All practice though I suppose. These quality scissors come in super handy. Popped the tape off the next day after leaving them in the sun to cure. As you can see they're not identical left to right but given theyre on opposite sides of the car they should be good enough. Next step was sort of painful of marking and trimming /repeat until they sat in nice and flush. Like so. And the other side. Had to sand some excess resin off this side. I chopped the bottom section off the guard which will be replaced with the new garage mak vents. Looks much more aggressive I think. Given that I'll be cutting down the back lip of the guard to not much I decided to strengthen it with some supports. So I chopped up one of the side skirt ends to glass into the back edge of the front guards. Like so, required some trimming/linishing to get the shape to a good fit. The level which the front guards had to be chopped at to give me a nice big area to sit brackets against and drill holes through left me with an uneven surface on the front side. This is what the vent will be mounted against so I needed to get it smooth. I added this extra material to the new bottom edge to make it nice and sturdy so I could sand the front off with no concern. Using a bit of sticky tape covered card board coated in pva so it would come off ok and maskign taped into position. Left it overnight again and popped it out the next day like this. Front side. Gave it a hit of the air flap disk and it tidied up well. Plenty of meat in it now so I could smooth this front edge off. A better angle you can see where the gelcoat stops. Dummying it up it became clear I also needed more of a flange on the top of the vent if I'm going to have room to drill/bolt it neatly. Chopped up some tops out of the same side skirt ends so they didn't look odd Moulded them on with the same tape method as before. Began to mould on the larger area to attach the top of the vents. Used a combination of blue tac tape and gravity to keep them on the right angles. PVA helped them pop off easily with a screw driver Slight mishap with a paddle pop stick More than enough. They'll need to be sanded down slightly actually. Back side. More before the end of eternity... =P |

So another update on whats been happening with the never ending story. Lots of background learning on composites stuff mostly.
Which translates into progress but in actual finished parts for the car nothing special. Also lines have had alot of work done. This is fiddly work and required much patience. The motor will need to come back out for a few things which are happening. I'll get into that in a future post but it'll also give me a chance to finish all the hard lines in the engine bay. Skirts fitted up happy with how they've turned out. Should look pretty good and be at least semi functional. Wiring splurge I'll wait til my side skirt barge boards are finished before I finish these panels off and block the heights down to match the level I need. More soon. |
