Brakes....it's a GROOOVE thang!!!

So my buddy & I go to do a 5 lug swap on his S13 rear rotors & this is what we find.....(see attached photo).

I've seen some weird shit happen with S13 & S14 rear brake pads & rotors, (abnormal pad wear, chewed up rotors, etc), but nothing like this before!!

How many of you can actually say you've seen a brake pad, (the pad itself), wear down over time & form a protruding groove (see orange at top of photo) in the pad material itself that actually cuts a rounded deep channel (see red at bottom of photo) into the metal rotor??

The pad material can't be THAT defective now can it?? My buddy thinks, (but is not sure), that the brake pads we removed today are old PBR Metal Masters, but he's not sure. It's been a while since he last swapped out his brake pads and he doesn't remember what he put in the last time he swapped out his pads & rotors.

Anyhow, after checking out the calipers & slider pins, (they checked out okay), we pretty much came to the conclusion that it was the pad material itself & not the calipers that caused the problem. If it were a caliper problem, the damage to the rotor would have been more equal throughout the rotor...the entire rotor would have been chewed up. However, if any one has more any insight on this, my buddy & I would definitely love to hear it.

ID
..still in shock over the channelled rotors..

Not my car...my buddy's car..yep...he knew about it...but he didn't care...he drove on them like that.... he figured he'd be doing a 5 lug swap sooner or later..

As for hearing any grinding noise..in the times i've ridden in his car...nope never heard any noise from the rotors...weird eh?

I've seen this happen quite a bit. Seems to be from a defect in the pads. Material composition can be off a little sometimes.

It's amazing in what can happen under 5,000+ pounds of force. I have seen rotors that there is just the vents showing on one side, meaning the pad completely destroyed the fiction surface. The only thing the drivers ever complain about is an annoying sound under braking.

I know that if pads are even a bit forced in on our cars they can cause some stupid shit to happen. Not to sure on what would have caused your buddys brakes to do that...

Dang... thank God that he is doing the swap now. It could have been bad if he would have waited any longer.
