Yakima Roof rack

dam, the roof rack looks so sick on the s chassis! makes me want one but ill just be those honda guys rocking it cuz it looks tight haha, my fatass broke the bike......

2 x steel head yakima bike mounts

1 x gen II stretch kit + rear covers (i think the current version is 3, but that is for the newer q towers)

Just got the Yakima kit and looking forward to putting it on myself.

I have an s14a, bought the Q38 Kit with Q Towers and going to be ready to roll with a bike on top.

So I got a little excited last night and havn't had a chance to put the bike racks actually on yet, plus I'm still waiting for the stretch kit to be delivered.

Some of you were asking for the measurements, here's what I've found works. For the M1: 36.25" and for the M3 (rear bar) it's 36.5". That seems to work. Here's some photos (I'll take more once I get the stretch kit on)

I just noticed that Nathan has his clipped to molding, where as S14 and I have clipped it directly to the roof. Nathan, do you notice any issues with clipping it to molding?

u are correct, i'm using q11 clips and they clip really taught. I do not notice wobbling and they aren't damaging the moldings either. Perfect window seal as well (no wind noise). They have served me well so far!

1. u try...body kit off...drive

2. i have other clips for my other car, which is not modified whatsoever. so that does fine in the snow.

That is too much weight for the rack, it will eventually damage your roof!

i think he'll be ok as most racks (when mounted over the doors are rated for 165lbs and the weight is being dispersed over those 4 points (q towers)

i think its fine and held up good driving to and from 2hrs on expressway to track going 70miles/hr? 130km/hr. the roof is stonger then you think lol

i spoke to a fellow zilvia member here who put 8 wheels on his roof. Smallest size being like 18x10J's or something and that's when it started putting indents into the roof.

my setup with the 4 up there is nothing. 17x9.5J I carry wheels regularily on my roof no dents yet.

don't knock it till you try it. ^_^

i figured that forged wheels (if te37) or whatever those were would be around 20lbs per rim ... def underestimated those if u are saying 220lbs. ... anyways... i say as long as it's not making dents in the roof currently...jlee should be fine! i'd maybe not considering carrying 4 of my VSKFs atop my roof. those weigh as much as battleships.

Aren't the roof racks mounted to the a-pillar? That is an extremely flimsy piece of metal.

All that weight up there trying to move around just means that it is only a matter of time till it rips off.

i just used trule trays cause they bend down so i dont have a crazy angled tray

well the weight isn't from the clips ....there are 4 towers with rubber pads that rest on the roof which i'd assume takes the brunt of the weight. The clips simply keep the rack on the roof. I'm sure if someone is at the track with their bike rack and 160lbs of load, then maybe it might be a bit sketch

u can use thule trays with yakima stuff? i thought thule was square cross bars vs yakima cylindrical ones. need pix!

Yes my clips are hooked onto the window trim piece. I'm going to switch it to how S14_driver and SHIFT_nismo have theirs.

If you guys could chime in as to what measurements you used that'd be great.

And !Zar! in regards to the weight being up there and putting strain on the flimsy trim. Yes it is flimsy but it's held up so far. And keep in mind when I have wheels on the rack I'm not driving like an idiot. Slow accel easy decel. Drive smart. Haven't had any issues.

And MB battles weight how much again? 20something pounds? x 4 that's not 220lbs.. LOL

heres a pic of my car before paint it was painted about a year ago

as you can see yakima rack and trule trays and its nice and flat no stretch kit and i think the trule looks way sleeker

I was looking for a roof racks,and someone give me this post link

I gat an old roof rack for BMW/E34,it's slightely the same as shown above,for my 240sx/3dr.

I'll test fitting on it,and i'll let you know if it's fittable or not(with pics if needed)

I know that BMW's roof racks are more easy to find

FYI,to find informations on Yakima.com site,you have to choose 'dealer fit my car tool',and select the right options(Nissan/240sx/89-93 year/3dr for my case),and you'll find all related references

it would appear that the tray isn't level and sports a reverse rake (front is higher than the rear)

what clips are u using to clip onto the molding over the rear 1/4 windows? the same as me? hrmmmmm

i still adore my stretch kit!

i might* be selling my rack setup. not in college anymore so i'm not taking my bike to campus . i'm still riding bikes though!
