I seen a few different posts talking about CAEs, but I still need some advice.  Lauren, I think you said that CAEs don't work well in rainy weather.  Does anyone know if this is true, cause here in Vancouver it rains A LOT.  West, I think you said that the CAE wasn't worth the money.  Why?  It's only $100, right?  Does it give you any extra hp?  

Anyone out there that has driven their car with and without the CAE?

I took it off my old 91 240SX. It sucked up dirty air and in my conclusion for only maybe 1-3HP it isnt worth the stress to the engine. I ran through a whole summer/winter here in CO with the CAE on and it never sucked any water or snow/slush in. Although one time it was real bad out and sucked a little in and stopped the engine from reving for a sec. In the winter snow/slush would surround the intake, but it would keep driving of course, show cant really get through the filter. If it were me I would spend the 100$ on some stuff to block off the intake from the rest of the engine and making pipes to route the cold air to the engine instead of using the CAE.

Ive got an Injen intake with CAI on my '97 240, I love it.
I removed the CAI for a few days of real wet weather and I could notice a difference, I was very happy when I put it back on. It also sounds alot meaner with it especially at WOT  <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

So far Ive driven it alot in the rain and havent had any problems with it. I removed it that one time more out of paranoia than anything else. A couple of reputable mechanics I know told me it is actually good to get very small amounts of water into your engine occasionally, it will clear out alot of the carbon buildup in there. As long as you dont drive into a puddle and actually put the CAI in the water.. you should be OK.

As far as picking up debri? Im not sure on that one, Ive got a K&N filter so I just hope it is doing its job.

Course, like West said, you could always put that $100 toward something else, like a shortshifter or a strut tower brace. So it is really up to you.

well, i'm not so worried about the $100.
I'm more worried about doing damage to my engine.  

The shifter is on order.  Can't wait.....
Just hope the install doesn't take the whole day.

I can't remember if I said the CAE doesn't work well in rainy or snowy weather, but I know here in OK, we get some really heavy rains and snow storms, so I'd remove it because I was paranoid (I currently have no splash guard on the driver's side--I think it's because of a previous CAE).  For my car, every little bit will help, and it all adds up (kinda like saving all those pennies from fast-food drive-throughs! hehe).  But, that's just my .02

I have heard before that the K&N filter won't suck up any water unless sumerged under water for 15 seconds. And i believe this is true. MY brotehr has an MX6 with a CAI that the K&N filter is seriously less than 3 inches away from the ground. And no problems yet, driven in every condition there is. There is no reason to worry about water damage at all.

I have and  love my injen cold air extention.  It sits low, and is great in Florida weather.  I have taken mine off, and there is a noticable power loss.  (I live in FL with the 100 degree days.)  With it on... much better sound.

Ford Focus- automatic??? hahah.... well i hope you get your baby fixed soon and good luck with the autobody and hope they do a great job... =) think this way.... no more scratches on bumper and hood, well atleast for a while
