SR Would you do it?

So A friend of mine has offered me his old red top SR20det for $400, and it has recently threw a rod and put a small hole in the block about the size of a quarter. Other info
-Main bearing Ceased
-No cams
-No Injectors
-Tranny is good
- Turbo needs to be rebuilt
I figured I could tear it down and throw it on a stand and pick away at it over the next year or so. Would you do it? I know it needs a lot but could it potentially end up being cheaper or same price? And I feel it may lend me the opportunity to buy the good parts of the get-go rather then replacing/rebuilding etc. Thanks I look forward to your input.

Block welding alone is not cheap. But what you are looking at could potentially be practically impossible to do.

If the hole in the block also went through an oil galley, you have no possible way to separate water from oil even if you managed to weld the exterior of the block and insert new sleeves.

Its a dead end for you.

You should buy it and just plug the hole with silly putty!!! If it did that much damage on the bottom end, what makes you think anything is fucking salvageable off it?!?! Offer him $40 for the tranny...thats about all you can use at this point.

The head, transmission, and harness, plus accessories could be more than $400 if you can salvage that, buy it. The block maybe only worth it's weight.
Get out of that box gentlemen!

give him $100 tops, beacause your buying a boat anchor. The block is junk, crank is junk, head might be salvageable, trans could be good (but who knows how much he beat it), wiring harness (if not butchered) could be nice as a spare or quick buck.

But if you think about it, your buying a head and trans for $400. Thats all you can really use. Why rebuild the t25 if your going to "build" a motor with "good parts?" youll probably upgrade that as well, which means youll cook the trans, so youll upgrade that as well. basically its not worth it to you. Buy a nice block thats already had the machining done and start a build. Your buddy is fucking you raw without spitting on it first, in this deal. Now tell him to be gentle.

P.S. - Holes in blocks make blocks garbage. Idk anyone who has welded a block and it lasted or was worth doing it. It would make a pretty sweet coffee table though.

Let me put it to you like this.

My buddy sold me an entire longblock, minus manifolds, for 500 all it needed was a hone.

what your talking about is bordering on stupid, but pretty much what daryl said is what your looking at.

Alright thanks for your input guys. To be honest I am pretty new at this, never bought a motor before so just asking. When I bought my car I had no idea how to do anything to it, now my car is working flawlessly with great mods that I did myself but now it's time for me to keep reading and get ready for a motor swap. Just looking for your guys's 2 cents on the idea. I never thought it was worth it but never hurts to hear a second opinion.

The reason he's asking is because he heard sr20 for $400, excitement set in before common sense, it's happened to lots of people, he's a newb at this, don't flame him we were all this way about one thing or another one time and that's the reason we're on here today looking for info and giving info on our mistakes and triumphs so newbs can learn too.

OP, this is going to save ya money and headaches, No.

Save your money and buy an engine that is functional

This "friend" is ripping you off, selling a motor to you because he knows you're new to this so it's a quick easy $400 in his pocket while you eventually realize it's not salvageable.

Ask yourself why wouldn't he just keep it? Because it's useless.

Good luck bro.
