Post Official specs of Nissan GT-R revealed

Filed under: Coupes, Sports/GTs, Japan, Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan

click above image for full gallery of the Nissan GT-R

We could swear that Inside Line didn't post official specs of the Nissan GT-R yesterday at the same time it published the first batch of official pics, but there they are today. Nothing shocking here, but we do have hard numbers now. The GT-R's twin-turbo 3.8L V6 will produce 473 horsepower and 434 ft-lbs. of torque. That's a bit more than the 450 HP many were anticipating, and we're guessing Nissan's official power rating is still a bit conservative, as well. 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds is awfully quick, and there are plenty of supercars out there with more power that can't hit that mark. All-wheel-drive, of course, aids the delivery of each pony to the pavement, while the only transmission available will be a GR6 dual-clutch six-speed. Paddle shifters are evident in the pics we showed you yesterday, and Inside Line report that they're the same leather-wrapped aluminum ones as in the G35 sedan.

So there you have it. Nissan's embargo on information surrounding the GT-R has been laid to waste in less than 24 hours, and we now know exactly what it looks like and what type of hardware is under the hood. We're still going to Japan next week to see the GT-R unveiled in person, and hopefully we'll uncover some more worthwhile info about Nissan's badly kept secret.

Yeah I hope a real Manual Gearbox will be available, not like it matters to me.
Paddle Shift stinks hard though.

you obviously know nothing about F1 paddle shift transmissions which is basically whats in the GTR. The tech for this trans comes right out of the Renault F1 car. I stated this before I will state it again. Unless you have studied these transmissions you should not comment on them being crappy because they aren't and if you say they are your ignorant.

Speaking on shifting...

Some do like the feel of having a clutch pedal and having the shifter on the side. I personally love driving a stick shift vehicle. However, the development of paddle shifting, specifically the speed of the shift and the ability of automatically rev matching the engine to match the desired gear without any backlash, has improved dramatically in some of the higher end vehicles.

I suppose it would depend on what the target was for Nissan when they were deciding on what type of gear shifting mechanism they wanted for the GTR. If you want all out performance, minimizing driver error, and having 100% repeatability, then the answer is clear.

Electronic paddle shifting.

This is just the first batch of GT-R's. Nissan might/could end up bring a manual shifting GT-R in later years.

I just never understood paddle shifters. I've have to drive it. How does skipping gears work? Like while cruising going from 3-5 or 4-6? If you don't shift will it hit redline or shift automaticly?

The shifting logic can vary greatly from car to car. In some cars it will get up to redline and shift for you automatically. In others, notably the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano when put in sport mode, will keep the car in a specific gear until the driver decides its time to shift.

So in other words, it varies from car to car.

Skipping gears-again, this varies from vehicle to vehicle. A seven speed transmission could drop from 7th to 3rd without stepping through each gear if you press the down shift paddle fast enough. Or, like an automatic, you could drop from 7th to 3rd by just putting the accel pedal to the floor. Its different for each vehicle. On others, you have to go through each succesive gear to get to the one desired.

The GT-R is going to be one of the most unique cars in the US. If I could sell a kidney for $80k to get the car, I might just think about it.
