S14 SR block W/S13 SR head...Whats involved?

From what I can tell, any one who has asked this question has never actually gotten a full answer on it. It seems every time this subject gets brought up there tends to be an argument over VVT and s13 vs s14 head characteristics.

Either way, what's the truth behind this. Are they actually interchangeable? If so have you tried it yourself?

The rumors I've heard regarding this:
1. water pumps different - from what i've read they're the same.

2. front timing cover is different? - no idea on this one.

3. Welding over the VVT oil port? - thats the main one I would like verified.

4. And then there is the oil pickup - It seems the s14 SR has a larger opening on the pickup.

Currently I've got an s13 SR with a slight noise. when you rev the car up and let the RPM's fall you will hear a quick chatter at around 1800-2000. Also if the car idles a little low you'll hear the chatter. From what I can tell its either piston slap or maybe a spun rod bearing. Either way, I've got an s14 SR block that I plan to have rebuilt/built. I've got a set of Eagle rods and another crank that has been polished. The plan is to get a new set of CP pistons, some rings and bearing and get the whole rotating assembly balanced and bottom end assembled. At that point I'll just swap over my head and supporting mods and be done with it.

But again this brings me back to the original question about block compatibility.

I talked to a local shop today,"Tiger Racing." I was told the only thing that needed to be done was to "block off" the VVT oil passage. He said you can weld it closed.....

We'll see, I plan to have this motor built in a few months so I will post some results.
