SR20DET transmission tailshaft gap

I've searched online all over and everyone says that the SR20DET swap should fit the stock drive shaft. Just got mine put in today. It has a gap on the transmission tailshaft when I install the stock driveshaft. Is this supposed to be like this?
I have an SR20DET motor and transmission in a 1990 240sx hatchback (was auto, converted to manual by previous owner).
I had to take off the tailshaft cover on the SR trans in order to get it to fit but there's the gap now. Do I need to trim the tailshaft cover and for that?
