Trans mount or motor mounts. Did you even bothering looking under the car?
Metal gears aren't all just going to shift over in the case I don't think.
Most likely scenario you're banging gears, tranny mount breaks and then shifts over. Or motor mount breaks and the engine cocks sideways.
Either/or, the gear box then shifts over.

Hmm I just always thought it would be something internal with the tranny. I'll take a look under the car. I know my Motor mounts are old but haven't had any shaking or anything that would make me think they went bad. Thanks for the input.

Doesn't sound like mounts. I had completely torn engine and tranny mounts just recently the symptoms of that are:
● excessive slop or engine/trans moves while decelerating when you lift your foot off the gas.
● when shifting fast you tend to misshift or even grind a gear because of the excessive slop created when you unload the engine quickly
● lack of power transfer at take off and shift points
● shifter physically swaying from left to right anywhere from 3 inches to ~6 inches depending how torn or bad the mounts are (engine or trans mounts) mine had the whole 9 yards and around 6 inches of shifter wobble on highways lol.

possible the bushing on the bottom of the shifter snapped...but that would be more play in shifting usually...sounds like needs more visual on all the parts!
