S13 KA24DE Into S14 Swap Questions/Help Needed

Hey fellow Zilvians,

Not sure if this is where I should post this, but if it's not, hopefully the mods can move it and help me out. I've done some searching over the past couple weeks and I'm reading a whole bunch of different answers. Anyways, onto the story…

I'm tackling my first engine swap this weekend because my 95 S14 KA took a shit on me. Previous owner said he used to "drift" it, got so sideways that the motor ran dry then it developed this huge, agonizing knock . It's pretty clean and I got it for $1300 so I didn't really care about the motor.

My new motor that I was just able to pick up last weekend for super cheap is a KA24DE out of a S13. Runs great, only has about 130k miles on it (as opposed to the 187k on my S14 KA) and has all the EGR/emissions crap deleted.

My BIGGEST question is how am I supposed to get everything working correctly/swapped properly so it will start up and run perfectly first try? I know I need to swap the S14 intake manifold and S14 distributor to the S13 motor to start, and that I need to swap throttle bodies. BUT, I've also read that some people say I need to swap exhaust manifolds, MAFs? I need to remove the valve cover, turn the crank and time the dizzy? What?

I'm just looking for all the correct answers in one place so I can get this thing swapped properly and have a good running basis to get this thing sliding properly

Any help is appreciated and I apologize if this is a n00bi3 question. Thanks!

Swap everything from the old motor to the new one you are putting in. Pull the s14 ka and swap the whole manifold set up and egr pipe and exhaust. You already know you need the distributor. Use the valve cover that's already on the motor since s13,s14 are different. You don't need to touch the TB because your swapping manifolds and it's connected to it. All you need to do is make sure timing is on when you install the distributor. It's simple, the s13 and 14 are the same motor at the core (head & block) all you're doing is swapping.

I can tell you're not familiar with working on cars.. If you don't know how to set timing please learn, it's very important. Search. Everything you're unfamiliar about is easily identifiable. It's called distributor timing. YouTube it if anything.

Thank you! Yes, this is my first time tackling anything with motors. I've worked on cars for the past 4 years and have done a ton of suspension, exhausts, radiators, shifter rebuilds, general maintenance and anything else I help my friends with, but there's a first time for everything. All the info is appreciated and I will learn.

What would cause the timing to be off in this case?

well your pulling the distributor out of the old motor to go into the new. when you put it back in, it has to be installed so all the internal work together. it has to be set so it fires on the number one cylinder first. make sure the motor is at tdc (Top Dead Center). put in the distributor correctly, start the car, then adjust your timing to 20 degrees with a timing gun. and then re- adjust it with the tps unplugged.

you will find yourself pulling the distributor out multiple times because its off by a tooth but dont give up, you will eventually get it! GL
