only 275/40R17... no 45 series. And even that's a little tall for a 240.

a 275/45 is not the same as a 255/45, and even a 255/45 is too tall by 5% (you should really be staying within 3% diameter, and getting as close as you can). I run 255/40/17 on all 4 corners.
check http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html when you size tires
275/40 is still too tall by almost 9%, you want a 35 series which is less than 1% off. that number is relative to the width, a 205/35 is NOT as skinny as a 275/35.

That is true that you want to ideally stay w/in 3% of stock tire size - thanks for the help tastyratz.

A 275/40R17 will actually be closer to stock diameter to FusionR240sx s14 than the 255/45R17 he is running (about 3% instead of 5%). I think you may be comparing the wrong stock tire size (s14 is 205/55R16 I believe).
