I think it would be nice if when you are in a thread, you click on a user's name, and select the option to pm, it just pops up in a small side window instead of taking you out of the thread.

If you're using firefox, click on the user's name, you will get a drop-down, hover to the one that says "send private message to [user]" and then RIGHT CLICK that, and select "open in new tab..."
Problem solved.
