Enter adjustable rate mortgages. People making 30 grand a year buying 200 grand houses because the interest rate at first was 3%. Add to that people's natural desire to be the best, living outside of their means, buying $40,000 vehicles, racking up their debt to LOOK successful, then suddenly stuff gets more expensive like gas, people start ignoring bills, they start to loose their homes and vehicles, the bank needs to find the money somewhere, interest rates go up, more people stop paying, banks start to loose money... You can see where I'm going.

We, as a nation, got complacent. We did this to ourselves. We need to get back on the road to fiscal responsability and accountability, and if we need to completely crash to rebuild, so be it. Its everyone's fault. Finding 1 person as a scapegoat, like the Liberals want to to with Bush, is idiotic. Same thing with the conservatives, blaming Obama (even though he isn't helping one little bit). Look in the mirror, and at your neighbor working at mcdonalds driving the Cadillac.

And the system is fucked. There isnt much to say about the system besides that. Welfare, medicare, et cetera... All inherently socialist programs. Socialism and consumeristic democracy don't work together.

It's nice when someone actually gets it right.

This post has much truth in it. So many peolple bash the president even though he has only been in office 8 months. It is to be expected though. Our culture centers around the here and now(there is proof of this) while quite a few of his polices are for much later. Due to the way we as Americans are this is obviously conflicting with what a lot of people.

I won't say he is perfect because he has and will make mistakes, however I do say that he just like any American is doing the best to fix the country the way he sees fit.

My problem with politics is not Barack, my problem is the whole Red VS Blue. By its nature having two opposing sides trying to run things is not going to work. Since they disagree with one another inevitably they will hinder each other from accomplish things, either purposefully, or accidentally.

We learn in business all the time, you can't make everyone happy, there has to be some losers. A lot of Republicans are agasint abortion, a lot of Democrats are pro choice, and so on and on. The way to make that work is to come together and figure out how to best benefit the majority. Red and Blue reminds me of a bitter married couple that has to deal with each other all the time but cant stand to be around another.

Lastly, IMO the whole conservative/liberal thing should be done away with as well. I think that should not matter and should have as little influence on politics as possible. Especially when you start breaking it down into the subcategories, liberal conservative, etc.

In the end you can complain about the President all you want, but there are two truths that all must realize are true. One, no matter how much you don't like what he is doing, you do not know the backbstory behind it nor do you know the outcome of it in the future. Two, no matter how much you don't like what he is doing, we are stuck with him for another 3.2 years.

The categorizations were always so broad & vague.
But yeah, I think the Al Gore thing pretty much was already the low point of Nobel.

Think that's just the nature of being voted into 4 yr terms.
You have to provide results fast, OR doing nothing at all at (to play things safe).

I do think there are serious concerns in our Health care system that need to be addressed.
Change has to start somewhere, & it isn't going to be cheap.
I admire Obama's intentions and what he wants to achieve.

I just think that more planning has to go into it.
Health Care insurance, although integral, isn't the only problem.
There are also things that can be done that don't necessarily cost too much $$$.
I.E. implement laws that regulate questionable health care coverage practices.
Set caps on how much health care companies can charge, etc.

Sooner or later, Health Care has to be addressed.
It really isn't working out the way it is.
I agree with Obama when he says 'ppl should have to go broke when they get sick', or something like that.

I think a lot of people don't understand how the government works. I think people imagine that our elected Representatives and Senators sit in this great big building that is the Capitol and every day, for 8 hours, one after another gets up and addresses the rest of Congress. You know, like in all those Gladiator or Spartan Movies.

Yeah...that doesn't happen.

Here's how Congress works.

The United States of America is ruled by a three-branch federal government.

The three branches of government are as follows:

-The Judicial Branch
-The Executive Branch
-The Legislative Branch

the Legislative Branch (aka Congress) is responsible for enacting laws (aka legislating!).

A congress (yes, lower case c) in the United States Congress is a 2 year term that is usually subdivided into two separate sessions (each session usually runs from JAN until NOV/DEC).

Only they don't actually legislate that whole time.



(That's all true, by the way.)

But it's also a little misleading.

You know how people say the office of President is greater than any one man?

Well the same is true of the members of Congress. Laws are very complex things, after all.

Besides the constant input from outside analysts and experts (aka lobbyists) legislation is actually written and reviewed by dozens if hundreds, or even thousands of lawyers.

Bills and laws aren't 1,000+ pages long because someone enjoys writing and reading legal minutiae. No, it's because they have to be that long.

When you enact or change a law you have to back-check which, if any, sections of the United States Code have been affected by the new or proposed law. That's literally tens of thousands of pages (and that's doesn't include reading case studies and or court cases dealing with these topics; add on another few thousand pages for those).

Legislation usually takes several years to put together and pass. The only exceptions are formal, reoccurring legislation like the Federal Budget (although that usually isn't passed on time either) and legislation dealing with emergency situations like the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 or the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (both of which were passed within a matter of weeks).

Yeah, so, basically it's gonna be a while before Congress will be able to submit a bill that meets the President's expectations.

There is a difference between living outside your means and being fucked by the system. Sure, sometimes you get fucked by the system.
