Eh, whatever. Its not like the tires I buy are super expensive anyhow. But I only see this putting stress on China-US relations. You know, you want Americans to keep their jobs and not have them outsourced? How about cut the rediculously high wages the unions demand? If a company wasn't paying a union employee 70 dollars an hour to push a button for 8 hours with a 2 hour lunch, then I'm sure that job would still be in America, instead of where ever.

Hope and Change

Translation: HOPE that you still have some CHANGE left out of your paycheck.

As far as stressing China-US relations? Don't say that too loud, or else the conspiracy theorists will use it as ammo in their next YouTube video. This is Obama's way of pushing us into war like Bush did with the attacks in 2001.

In all honesty though, if you want to save money on tires, STOP DRIFTING! You're just wasting tires and chassis.

Lol this is very true. Because, you know... China actually has the crashed UFO from Roswell in a factory in Beijihng, where they use it to put flouride in our water to give us all cancer, and implant tiny cameras and microphones into the cheap chinese products we buy so they can spy on us.

Its not a conspiracy... Its common knowledge.

Basically...

Lol.. The title mislead me. I thought this was a 35% tax on the tires. Not, a 35% tax increase.
Sucks for those who like Chinese tires..

wow that is really bad for us. if they raise taxes on those tires, its probably going to raise taxes on all tires that come from china. this would push prices up on nexxens, wanlis, nankang, sunny , federals, champiro, etc etc!! not all the tires federal makes is made in china... but I would not doubt MOST of them are. Say good bye to sub 100dollar 17inch tires.... hopefully mexico has something for us.

Hard parking a car is a waste of a chassis. And road racing and the such wastes tires as well, not only drifting. Crappy. I hope Federal, which are Taiwanese, don't get the same tax. The RS-R is an awesome grippy tire.

The main thing that needs to be clarified is to whom the tariff is applied to.

Are the companies that are taxes:

A) the ones owned by companies located in China?
(Wanli, etc)

OR

B) this also entail companies that might be owned by a non-Chinese country that have manufacturing facilities in China?
(pretty much everyone, Falken, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Kumho, etc)

IF:
A) would end up pissing off China and nothing more (in the short run)

IF:
B) effects of A), plus
raising the costs of pretty much all respectable tire companies,
hurting the tire industry as a whole (US included),
raising the cost for all consumers.

What the tariff will fail to do either way is prevent outsourcing of jobs.
Manufacturing will just move from China to the next closest location.
I'd wager that's NOT going to be the US.
Heck, I don't even know why ppl bother with large scale manufacturing in the US.
Between taxes, legal liabilities, cost of insurance, cost of overhead (not even counting wages), etc, it's just not a realistic option.
There's a difference between running a business & a charity.

What the U.S. SHOULD tariff, are the countries that tariff us.
If Japan tariffs our cars by 20%, we return the favor likewise to a comparable commdity.
If Korea tariffs our rice 100%, we do likewise.
If China imposes a 50% tariff on our tires, then this would be the right move.
We pressure them into a situation where they have to buy more from us.

Another question that begs to be asked,
is whether or not it's a good idea to piss China off.
Whether or not you like China is probably irrelevant.

Do you really want them to be your enemy when you have to deal with Iran, Pakistan, Afghan, N. Korea, & the Russians?
Economically, we could not do without China given how much US companies have invested in there.
Not only are they a huge resource for raw materials & manufacturing.
They will also be (if not already so), a huge market.
Like them or not, its not in our best interests to worsen relations with them.
If anything, they are our best ally.

Unlike our other 'good-for-nothing' allies in Europe, Asia, & the Middle East,
our relation with the country consists more than just hand-outs.

I do think that these manufacture companies will move to the next place closes. Im sure China will start doing something of there own to get money from us you know make things even, and I dont think it is a good idea to piss of China at all.

Hankook is Korean owned, but has manufacturing facilities in China.
I think it's safe to say everyone is effected at this point, NOT just Chinese owned tire manufacturers.

You guys need to read more instead of just making wise-cracks.

Hankook Falls as U.S. Imposes Tariff on China Tires (Update1) - Bloomberg.com

Hankook Falls as U.S. Imposes Tariff on China Tires (Update1)

Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Kyunghee Park

Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Hankook Tire Co., the largest overseas tiremaker in China, fell the most in almost eight months in Seoul trading after the U.S. slapped a 35 percent tariff on Chinese-made tires.

The company dropped 8.8 percent in Seoul trading, the biggest decline since Jan. 20, to close at 20,200 won. Aeolus Tyre Co., the largest Chinese-listed tiremaker by market capitalization, fell 3.3 percent in Shanghai.

Seoul-based Hankook, which exports about 12 percent of its Chinese output, will switch to shipping tires from South Korean plants, it said in an e-mailed statement today. President Barack Obama imposed the levy after the United Steelworkers complained that Chinese imports were pushing U.S. workers out of jobs.

“There is concern that Hankook Tire could be affected by the U.S. decision,” said Kevin Lee, an analyst at Shinhan Investment Corp. in Seoul. He has a “buy” recommendation on the stock.

China “strongly opposes” the tariffs, according to a statement of the Ministry of Commerce Web site. The U.S. violated rules of the WTO and the tariff imposition is a breach of the commitments made by the U.S. the Group of 20 summits, the ministry said.

Hankook, which has two out of its five plants worldwide in China, had taken steps in anticipation of a tariff, it said. The company has about a quarter of the Chinese passenger-car tire market, according to its Web site.
