No dialysis until her fever comes down. The one positive side to this whole series of horrific events is that when she gets home we will share a bond stronger than most people can ever imagine.

Thank you all for the wishes, she's been keeping up with the thread and she is very touched at the outpouring of support from people she's never met. As of Friday morning, her kidney's have gotten worse and her fever has risen higher. The doctor's have started dialysis and they have been giving her periodic ice baths to try and keep her temperature down. The latest plan is to bathe her at 1, 3 and 5am followed by surgery at 6. It is a very risky procedure considering her weakened state, but her options are growing limited. Please, if you're reading this, take a moment out to send her a good thought or two.

My prayers go out to you, man. As someone who works in the ICU and in the OR I know what you are dealing with. As risky as it may sound, the surgery is probably the only thing that can get her infection under control. The antibiotics will not work if she has a significant abscess and it must be drained if they are to get things under control. If she is young and otherwise healthy, the need for dialysis should be temporary and her kidneys will likely recover. I take it from your post that she is not intubated (does not have a breathing tube) so all things considered, it could be worse.
The fever doesn´t ¨burn up¨the antibiotics, as you mentioned. Rather, they want to place a central line because they can give stronger, more potent antibiotics through a central line than through a regular IV. Also, she may be experiencing such a high fever from a reaction to one of the meds she´s receiving. This could also contribute to her renal failure. Ask the MDs what they think about this possibility. It won´t hurt! Also, depending upon where the abcesses are, it is possible for an Interventional Radiologist to place drains in them without her having to receive a general anesthetic. You can ask them that too! Good luck and I hope she pulls through!

kouki-gymkhana, thank you for the insight, very informative.
She had the surgery this morning and is currently in recovery. I'm very happy she made it...the down side is that the Dr.s failed to find any obvious sourceof infection, so now I'm not sure what our options are. Relying on the meds has become a scary and unnerving idea due to their lack of success thus far. Thank you to all of our friends on Zilviafor the uplifting messages and thoughts, I believe that part of the reason she pulled through the operation is because of all the people in her corner. Thank you all from the bottoms of our hearts.

As of now, she's back in the ICU...still out of it because of the sedatives. They're trying to wake her slowly as to not cause shock to her weakened body. While they didn't find any obvious signs of infection, they removed a lot of bones chips from her back and are going to start her on antibiotics again soon.

As of this morning, she's still very sick from the anesthesia. It looks like we're on a "wait and see" plan with the antibiotics. I hate feeling so helpless.
