Oxygen/o2 Sensor purpose

What is the purpose of the oxygen sensor some people have it hooked up and some don't. What is the advantage?

ECU uses it to fine tune the car to stoich. Without it, the computer will run the engine rich and there goes your gas mileage.

Its used to keep afrs as close to 14.7 on gasoline engines at idle and cruising and light loads. When boosting, the ecu then goes into open loop and ignores the o2 sensor so it can richen up the afrs.
