The last year I owned the car was not really a correct representation of how often I drove it/the car was down. The whole "having a baby" thing while trying to redo an engine bay (among other things) really did not lend itself to finishing the car quickly and having much time to enjoy it. Considering the stages of life I have been through while owning and building this car, I'd say I got plenty of enjoyment out of it. Granted, I could have driven it less than 100 miles and smashed it into a few walls during that time- and I am sure some would argue that that would have been a better use of the car. Different strokes, I guess. |

I bought a 4runner last year after having driven the 350Z in the winter for three years. I had snow tires, so that wasn’t the issue, but the roads and weather just beat the hell out of everything up here. Needless to say, the Z is gone and in its place is a Tacoma. A daily truck really makes you appreciate your project/sports car that much more. You also can’t beat the utility of it as a home owner, and now with the dirt bikes, camping and everything else, I don’t know how I managed without it. Just something to think about, even with AWD I wouldn’t want to take my Evo/Subaru/Audi out in the winter to see the paint get ruined and all the fasteners rust into compacted dust. Best of luck with the Evo, seems like everyone is jumping ship anymore. Three big Subaru guys in my area with great builds sold or parted out and picked up Evos. It’s fairly common on NASIOC. Same is true with 350Z and S2K owners. |

Engine parts have been posted:
http://zilvia.net/f/sale-items/48559...-3-engine.html The partout is almost complete. The four year anniversary of buying my car will be here on Saturday, so expect one last update in the next week. I'm almost finished editing some photos I took the day I took the car apart. |

Not sure I understand the "having the kid experience" makes you want to jump from one tuner vehicle to the next. Because the Evo has 4 doors? It suddenly becomes a family car? If anything you should be looking at soccer mom van or some type of SUV. I don't get it...

Yank the AC, Heat, throw in a cage and lower an Evo and it will be just as impractical. |

Have you ridden in his 240 with 30k in it? I have, it's not even close to the chassis of a nice solid Evo/Sti. The Evo won't have all of the rattles, creaks, the "loose" feel, the harsh ride quality... and so on. Did I mention it has 4 doors and a useable back seat?

SUVs are fantastic and you'll never understand till you own one. It's like explaining why a manual trans is better than an auto to someone who could careless. If you live in the Midwest and get +100 inches of snow it's also a no brainer. Why bring a knife to a gun fight? I paid $3,800 for my '98 4runner, all records, (seriously) and rust free. I've put 30k on it, no issues. Texas, the UP, Rocky Mountains and even Burning Man last year. 19mpg highway, 17 in town. It costs less to fuel then my 350Z ever did. No to mention I can tow project cars, stuff a new dishwasher in the back of it and sleep in it when camping. Full size adults fit comfortably in the back as well. Salted roads are also a motherfucker. I could never see my self driving a mint STi or Evo as a daily on them, even if your "AWD like a Boss!". $4k truck? ...fuck it till the wheels fall off. |

I own a S13 with $7k in it. My 350Z is gone, S13 is still here. Ain't no squeaks or rattles, ain't worried its gonna break down either.
4 door ? I have a '05 Brocoma TRD and a '98 4Stunner. I believe in using the right tool for the job. Took me 10 years, but I've learned my lesson. No sense trying to make a hammer into a hacksaw. |

I have owned a WRX, a STi and a 240... I speak from experience on how they all work out in Midwest weather and how they all work out for hauling a family, luggage, stroller etc. |

It seems a lot of his complaints about the 240 were self inflicted. To low, no heat, no A/C, oil leaks, rides harsh, noisy... so forth. The car didn’t necessarily start out that way 4 years ago, so there is no reason to think the Evo will not end up in the same situation in a year or two. Trust me, I spent a good portion of my youth trying to find that balance… hell that is why I first bought a 240sx instead of an MR2 or another RX-7, I needed the utility of the hatch, but also better fuel economy when I was broke and in school. Sometimes it’s easier and cheaper to just say “This is my toy…. This is my tool”. If the toy breaks and I don’t have time and money, it sits for a few months, life goes on. Hell another wonderful feeling is you no longer have to get “this done” by tonight so I can go to work in the morning… not done, tired, diner time? Screw it, I’ll be here tomorrow. Not knowing Damon personally, but from what I can see, he is a very meticulous and clean individual. I know it would tear me up to drive my minty-fresh Evo in these god forsaken salty winters, so I’d imagine it would do the same to him. Why fight it? Why worry constantly about getting it washed every week, having a chunk of truck ice tear up your fiberglass lip when it smacks your car, or trying to get over some giant snow rut left by the plows when pulling into a parking lot ect. Quote:
A small collapsible stroller may fit in WRX, but you’re noting bringing home the new crib in one. You’re not picking up the lumber or parts for the new swing set and sandbox. Damon is welcome to buy whatever he wants. Honestly, selfishly, I’m glad his 240 is gone. Mu ha ha ha, mine is one step closer to being that much better, less competition. My only soap box point is… why fight it? Get the right tool for “family man”, which can be very inexpensive, and then let your toy be your toy. If you want that toy to be an Evo, great, by all means, they are fantastic cars! I’m not advocating that one must own for life what they start with, try it all, change cars every year even. But just realize life becomes much easier with two cars, especially if one is a utilitarian focused truck. Then when you want a MR2 or a Lotus 7 project… no fear, no excuse, you have a nice truck to get you by day to day. |

I'm pretty sure that Damon has a family / daily car. The EVO would be, just like his 240, a toy....
Nobody in this game would build a car to that calibre and not have a daily.... |

lolol. But yeah, in all seriousness, the Evo should be a great daily for my needs. I drive with my daughter in my current daily (a Toyota Matrix) about once per months tops. My wife takes her to daycare on her way to work each morning in her Highlander, so I usually don't have a need for taking her with me since we are usually driving that on the weekends as well. But, it will be cool to have the ability to take the family with me if we feel like going cruising on Woodward or getting ice cream or something. Cars and car gatherings are a big part of my life and I want my family to be able to enjoy it with me. Any Evo I buy will be close to ten years old and most likely a midwest car, so it probably will be far from mint. My intention is not to do a ton of suspension mods and stuff like the 240, so I am not too concerned about it. Sure it is a bummer to let it see salt and whatnot, but with good undercoating and frequent washes I am not terribly concerned about it. In fact, I may be into an Evo as early as next week. We'll see if the car checks out or not. |

I can see Corbic's point on needing a truck/SUV, but I have survived for nearly 39 years without one. However, I have plenty of friends with trucks and a truck here at the shop. It's very rare that I need the use of a truck, so it's not worth the money to own one for as little as I will use it. I like where this thread is going. We can now take it over since there is no longer a 240 build going on... you with me Mike? |
