View Full Version : Putting sr20 back together- Stuck :l

The story: Well, basically i had my cousins buddy work on my engine. Piston rings were replaced, head gasket, Head resurfaced, Valve seals changed. Block and head are completely together..Timing/ rockers/ cams together. Whole bottom end is done (oil pan, covers, catch can, crank, etc.)

The problem:The guy that has been working on it, keeps telling me he's going to come by and work on it

What i need? Help on what to do next.. Or a guide of some sort?
My 240's been sitting their for around a week, and plentiful of days within that time he said he would come, and he ignores calls, answers barely ever. It's supper annoying and i feel like crying (Lol?) Well, i love my 240 and its my baby girl :)

I know many many zilvia members have much knowlege on swapping and rebuilding, hense i'd really appreciate if someone, once again, can give me some sort of guide that can guide me step by step, or something along those lines, THANKS!

please tell me the first couple of pics are BEFORE you rebuilt it....in any case...best thing to do is get an FSM and start reading...

^^^^^ i was going to say the same thing, and if its after your guy rebuilt it, you need to take it apart and re-do everything he did. Cause it looks like it ran for a few 1,000 miles with oli in the top end. If you have the motor, and the parts, why cant you figure out where they go, and google torque specs for certain parts, hell im willing to bet that someone on here has posted torque specs and rebuild procedures on this site.

There is shit all in that thing. You do need to take it all apart again and start over, the other guy didnt know what he was doing. Its pretty self exsplanitory just use the fsm. Btw why did you ever take it apart?

Well, i only changed those parts and im not planning on keeping this car. I'm selling it within a week of it running. It ran perfect but my problem was, lots of white smoke exerting the exhaust. And yes, this is how it is now, and i'm putting it back together as it is. It was alot worse. What happens if you don't torque the bolts? I need this thing out of my garage within a few days. This is the first time (I) took it apart, well with him. It was apart, in pieces. Does the FSM go step by step? Or..

lol @ this. if you don't properly torque them you could have them too loose or too tight, stripping it out or it could back out....basically if you don't torque them it's gonna blow up real quick.

What does it mean for example if it says 127- 137 ( 13 - 14, 94 - 101) Or 6.3- 8.3(0.64 - 0.85, 4.6 - 6.1) ?

You've got alot of reading to do before you attempt to even touch this thing in regards to your knowledge and your current situation. heres a few simple steps that will help you
Step#1 Get your self a FSM(factory service manual) and read the sections pertaining to the engine including removal, installation, clearances, torque specs etc

step#2 Take that hideous thing apart. Chances are that if his level of work is anywhere near his level of cleanliness he probably didnt know what he was doing.


step#3 Take advice from knowlegeable members(aka people who have built these engines plenty of times and knowlegde from the fsm and put it back together.

How do i read those torque specs as mentioned above? And do i need a 1/2 inch torque wrench?

Call me crazy, but are you missing the oil pump internals, the two pieces that the crank goes thru (looks like gears) that should have been packed prior to re-installation? Its been a few months since I put mine back together but I do not remember being able to see that far into the front cover. And it looks like its missing the front main seal.

Wait, has anyone else noticed the silicone used for a head gasket? If you look in the first picture it looks like silver rvt being used.. Not positive. If it is have that engine redone by someone who knows how to. Doing it yourself for the first time will end up very very very bad.

It should be in the first couple of pages of the fsm it will show you how to read/use the fsm and also what tools are required. Just remember depending on how much you work on it, it can take from several weeks to several months and the fact that your trying to get rid of this thing makes me think you should have had a shop rebuild the engine instead of your cousins "friend", work on it.

before you act like a baddass zilvian, you should know that the FSM, iirc, says you should put some RTV there... so...

If your not confident in building the engine the correct way by your self I would consider just buying another longblock and dropping it in

Seriously, only assholes do that, but atleast they dont post all over the internet. Watch out for his for sale thread haha....... OP sell it to someone for a few hundred and move on. That head looks disgusting, like somoene took a shit in there.

No offense but it doesn't look like you know anything about working on cars. And your cousin's buddy is a POS half ass mechanic from what I see done to your motor in the pictures.

If I'd were you I'd have a real mechanic re-do everything.
