Has any one of you done this and how easy/hard was it? How long did it take? I'm just wondering whether I should spend the money and pay one of the techs to do it or should I just do it myself... so... help. Thanks.

It's pretty easy. Remove valve cover, remove guide (2 bolts), replace valve cover gaskets, install valve cover. Shouldn't take more than a half hour.

If it's an S14 it is rated at 12.5 hours for both chains. I was going to mine a month or so ago but my mechanic said it would last long enough for me to get my new engine so I didn't. But the job wass quoted between 5 and 8 hundred.

She was asking about the guide, not the chains.

Is the guide not needed, or are you going to replace it with a new one? I'm clueless about this topic and would like to know. My s14 has that plastic tick sound and I was told it could be the guide!

Are you talking about the DOHC or SOHC?

Well, *I* was talking about a DOHC, since I believe S13Grl has a '91.

Edit: Also, I was only talking about the upper guide. The lower is more complicated.

9591, you just removed the guide and that was it? You didn't re4place it? I'm just trying to find out what I can do myself? I would replace it if it is better or safer. If the replacemaent part isn't any better though then it would probably have the same prob. huh? Oh well let me klnow please. Oh yeah, DOHC!!
