Exclamation VLSD Problem

Hey guys I have a question and can't find anything anywhere on it so ill ask it here. I have a vlsd from a j30 but it did not come with a pumpkin. I am thinking of using my old open diff. pumpkin with j30 output flanges and j30 axles. Do you guys see any problem with this? would the output shaft even fit onto the open diff pumpkin and seal up correctly? Someone suggested that I swap the pinion gear from my open diff that it should work out fine as is. I never even heard of this was wondering if I can get some tips from you guys.

you cant use the VLSD Diff with the Open Diff Ring gear it wont fit. Open diff ring gears are thicker. You'd have to find a VLSD ring gear with the same Gear ratio as the Open diff.

I beg to differ. I just did this swap with a buddy of mine. He had S13 open diff pumpkin and we took the ring gear off of the open diff and put it on the J30 VLSD. Used J30 output shafts and axels.

Hmm weird I tried this a while ago with a S14 VLSD into a S13 Open diff and the Ring gear would not allow the proper back lash.
Granted I was drunk,

Give it a shot

IF this is so...I would have to go and grab a ring gear and pinion off a j30 correct? And this is going on an s13 not s14

If the gear ratio's are the same.

S13/S14 doesnt matter they are the same R200 Diffs

The important thing to remember is using the same spacers (that keep the differential snug) as the pumpkin you are placing it in. With the same ring gear + pinion and these spacers, the fitment is identical to that of the open diff.

We ran his car for a couple weeks and it worked great. He is getting new axles so we just recently pulled it back out to see if there was any damage to it and the oil drained out fine with little to no metal shavings on the magnet.

The guy I bought it from doesn't know the year that the vlsd came out of, is there anyway I can tell the difference between the early j30 vlsd and the later ones just by the internal itself? I don't want to go and get the output flanges and shafts and it end up being the wrong ones.

To clear everything up, Take your stock open diff pumpkin off your car, open and pour oil out, undo the 4 bolts holding in the differential. pop out open diff. Make sure to keep track of what side each shim went on! After that pull the open diff pinion gear off and install onto the vlsd, install vlsd with shims on original side. make sure there is correct amount of backlash than fill up with gear oil, pop cover back on top and go for a drive.

Hes using the s13 pumpkin. All he needs to do is use the ring gear from the s13 diff onto the J30 vlsd, get the correct flanges and axles. Put it back in with the correct shims from the s13 pumpkin.

Yeah the process now seems pretty simple. Still need a way to find out what year the diff internals are, if anyone knows please enlighten me

Hey here is the pic of the j30 vlsd. I'll put this in the identify thread too but if you could take a look and tell me if its from the early j30s or later j30s (6 bolt flange or 5 bolt) that would really help!
