im really lookin forward to the rest of this build.

I have a few questions though about the nats system. I read it wont deliver ground to the starter to start or start fuel pump or deliver power to injectors if it isnt removed or you dont have the whole nats system with key and everything. Now could i not just redo parts of the harness and hardwire injector 12v, hardwire fuel pump and hardwire the starter? i want to do a painless style chassis harness anyway and doing it this way wouldnt be to much work if hardwiring the parts i mentioned will successsfully remove the nats system.

You're not going to 'get around' nats. Either remove it with a flash, or transplant next to everything electrical from the donor vehicle... The computer has nothing to do with the starting system in regards to the starter. The computer tells igniters when to fire and injectors when to pulse... I don't think hardwiring everything is going to get you very far, but hey, go for it...

And ya, I wouldn't mind looking over something you draw up in regards to the wiring. Just make sure it works before you do a writeup so you have credability

I'm headed to my second autox event this weekend.. Can't wait... the way this thing pulls makes it all worth it. Several ride alongs said they couldn't believe the torque compared to an SR

Yeah a write up would be pretty cool to see, I had mine done by Zfever, thought about taking it apart and writing down what was done but never did yet lol. Might over this winter if I get to redo my bay.

Just won our first round of Grassroots Drift at Evergreen Speedway with my stock '04 VQ35DE in my 92' coupe. It ran great all day. I like it better from the sr because of the torque, and I like it better then the LS1 I had because of the lack of torque lol. The LS1 was way overkill for this track/my style. I drive it like a sr though. Could use a touch more power but I'm thinking of the 1/2" intake spacer and some longtubes down the road. Have fun with yours! Next "big thing" swap in my opinion.

Spent: you don't come up twords sc/nc for events do you? Yea im actually almost done with the wiring.....im still lacking the obdii port and gas pedal I plan on hitting up some of the local pull-a-parts this weekend if I can find time between working 3rd (that's what slows me down the most). I should have the ecu sent off for a flash and hopefully a drive shaft made any idea if any other yokes will work with the 350z trans?

Im doing part of my rough draft for the wiring tonight, if anyone wants to chime in on anything I may possiably overlook it be appreciated.

Here are some results.

My soldering iorn died 3 wires in. I don't plan on running a/c off the bat, I still have the fuel pump relay and start signal to go.

Driveshaft Specialist Inc

That's who did my driveshaft. I had them do an entire aluminum driveshaft for me. Just measured from yoke to yoke and they did the rest. It was one of the more expensive parts of my swap, but I didn't want to ghetto rig something togethor mating stock driveshafts. They will also sell you the yoke seperately. I don't know if the yoke is used for other nissan apps or something, but it runs VERY close to the shifter, as if it wasn't taken into account when made... mine barely clears. Mckinney also sells yokes but Driveshaft specialists prices were like a third of Mckinneys...

As far as events up toward the carolinas, I've just started doing SCCA events so I really haven't ventured far from where I am (Tallahassee, FL)... my first event was in S. Ga and I'm headed to AL this Sunday, then Jacksonville soon here too. Spent all this time building the car, now it's time to enjoy it .

Glad to see you're coming along with the wiring, it looks like you are putting alot more time (rightfully so) than I did initially... I recently pulled mine apart and eliminated everything I didn't need and also eliminated the front crossover... looks much nicer...

Before...

After...

Wires from engine harness I removed...

Wires from engine bay/harness I removed...

I reused the stock fuse/relay box for all of my wiring, it is directly behind the center dash, where the heater core use to be...

You can see the 350z pedal in the background... when you buy yours, just make sure you get the pigtail so you can splice it into the engine harness. The pedal literally bolts in place of the old 240sx pedal, just had to bend it up a tad.

Hey guys, been out of the car scene for a while now, just been watching from the sidelines for a couple years

Back with a new coupe and an LS1 waiting on the garage floor though, will make a big post soon (still love the VQ swap though!)

Glad to help in any way I can but my wiring knowledge is pretty faded, been a long while since I even looked at a diagram.

The VQ WRX project never got off the ground, no money back then to pursue it but it was a good idea!

My original setup was a front wheel drive VQ30DE running a ~95 Maxima ECU and harness. I should have stayed with that setup and got all the bugs worked out but I was having a persistent cyl 2 and 3 misfire that I just couldn't figure out. Right then I came across a killer deal on a FWD VQ35DE and tried to get it running on a 2002 Maxima ECU and harness but never got it to fire due to NATS system headaches. Lastly I switched that ECU to a MS2 setup running Ford EDIS ignition and finally got it running that way but never tuned. Shortly thereafter I got tired of being without a car for so long and parted it all out which I should have never done but hindsight is always 20/20 I guess!

What ever setup you go with I suggest a 350z oil pan and pick up tube, 350z rear coolant pipe and Z exhaust manifolds and intake manifold(if using 3.5L motor only) with manual throttle body from any vehicle, I used a Maxima one.

The easiest ECU to work with if using the VQ30DE will be the VQ30DE Maxima ECU, no security system to hassle with and easy to find harnesses to cut up.

Megasquirt is a long dark rabbit hole if you're new to custom ECUs as I was, I suggest avoiding standalones like the plague honestly although it's very capable among standalones.

If you're using a VQ35DE I suggest talking to Mark from Florida (PM me and I'll get you his contact info if you don't already know him) he helped me out tremendously on my project and was the authority at the time on working with NATS systems and VQ harnesses. Not sure if he's still into it but maybe.

Also, I'd look into the later 350z exhaust manifolds they are tubular like aftermarket headers and might clear the steering shaft.

Lastly, although I started this off with FWD VQ's and it can be a lot cheaper to do that, it's a lot more work and hassle to to do it that way and if you don't have any hookups at the salvage yard for example, it might not save you any money.

(A lot of that won't apply to your project in particular probably but I just felt like rambling

Fred

Hey look another update!!

hey guys, havnt made any more progress on the wiring due to lack of gas pedal and obdii port. i have been at the pull a part all day and i did pick up something pretty cool.

i like the idea of having projectors, picked them up for a cool $40!

when i got back home something else cool was waiting on my steps.

got my mount kit too...one delima i thought it was coming with a k-member..... looks like i have a few emails to send.

here is my new slightly used oil pan too!

so what do you guys think of the j30 lights? hopefully ill her something back from my mount kit guy so i can get this on the ball.

Fred you're still alive? Hahaha. Good to see you in this thread.

Yeah I've found that if you can wait for a good deal, you can snag a RWD swap for as cheap as it would cost to put together all the FWD/RWD components.

I need to get on my swap, I've been slacking and poor, hahaha.
