But having any drink bottles in the center console area just gets in the way IMO.. I have the USDM extended arm rest/cup holder (like those JDM ones) and had drinks, my elbow just knocks it over... The extended arm rest is only useful for me. |

Wow! So many diverse opinions. Like I said earlier, I'm going to make the ashtray one first because it's a little simpler and won't take as much R&D as the arm rest one but I am working on both right now. The dash vent ones are interesting but don't they put additional stress on the vents themselves? I don't know about the rest of you but my vents had trouble staying put when I got my car. So I ended up taking them apart and adding a small O-ring to one end of the vent on the plastic peg that it pivots up and down on. Then I snapped it back together and voila, like new vent. It is tricky to get them apart without breaking the tabs but it's much easier with a little heat.

I'm not sure I like that because I feel as if it would get in the way of my hand while shifting..?
Idk maybe I'm being too critical but i'd prefer the ash tray being a cup holder. Nah you're right, it's not Nico...but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to make our shitty ass cars less shitty..

By adding a cupholder to your shitty car, chances are itll be a shitty cupholder, and spill your shitty drink, all into your shitty cars floor, making it thus more shitty.

What about these? Nice and cheap. I'm not about to pay $130 for a scuffed up "JDM" cup holder.

and here I was wondering why zilvia feels so repetitive and dry with the same build threads and the same stance and tire threads... This guy was willing to make a neat product, and people are discussing ideas (gasp). I know, crazy, right? // Got my wiper motor cover in, btw, pretty nice, and not brittle/flimsy. Just gotta get around to deleting my ABS pump so I can install it. Rip, you got any pics of the progress with the cupholder yet? |

I wouldnt even use this for cups honestly. Anything I drink in a car can typically be bought in a bottle anyways.
I would just prefer a clean cup holder in place of the ash tray. That ash tray is uselss to me... |

A fellow on NICO used to make these years ago.
If I recall correctly, he would get the cup holder liners from junked Chevrolet Malibus and other generic GM vehicles. They could be used just the same for the ash tray location as well, I suppose. -Edit- Seems that someone already posted these on the second page. |

What a neat contraption. I removed my stereo and was planning to just have two din pockets, but this would be a much cooler space-filler accessory. Was it made by Nissan though? I am somewhat skeptical.
I know Nissan made these as a universal cup holder for their 90's vehicles: Then there is also this kind: Though I am not sure what other accessory can be used above/under it. I doubt it was was designed to leave a gaping hole. Too many options to choose from! |

I don't even know what's in my ashtray...
I normally go poking through it when I'm stuck in traffic or something, and find something that I didn't even know I lost :-P |

I don't really drink soda any more, but every now and then I go by Taco Bell just for Baja Blast. I find this to be completely worth having a cup holder lol.

Progress update: I am getting really close to being able to form the actual cup portion of the cup holders. I'm perfecting this first because I'll be able to use it in both the ashtray and center console models. Also I had to make some new frames for holding the plastic while it's in the oven. My old frame was barely holding on there toward the end of the last run of wiper motor covers so it was in need of replacement. I made a pair of new ones from 3/4 MDF so I can be loading one while the other is in the oven. Hopefully it will make production a little faster.
If everything goes well tomorrow I should be able to post a pic of the cup part, but we'll see because the Good Guys Car Show is going on this weekend and I may be going to that. My buddy is putting his Plymouth GTX in so it should be a good time.

ive been thinking about doing this for months. i could easily design a pop in molded plastic cup holder that popped in just like the ash try, print it on my SLA machine, then make a silicone mold for it. Id be able to get 25-50 units out of it depending on the final shape of the part and how well the mold holds up because of it. cost wise, it could be a lot depending on how much the SLA costs and materials. The material alone for the plastic 3d printed part I make the mold from may be a few hundred alone.
i could always make it out of carbon as well...hmmm so if riprodders version doesnt pan out, i can give this a shot if people are interested. If Riprodders works, then his will be the cheapest option since it'll be vac forming. riprodder, if you have any issues with getting the plastic to form, let me know, and Id be happy to trouble shoot it with you. i kinda want your cup holder since it means i dont have to make one and can concentrate on my diffuser design. |

A few things in response to what I've read:
I usually ony buy bottled sodas and drinks if I really do drink in my car, but most of the time I'm busy doing this thing called driving to drink in the car. With that being said I do drink redbull while driving and it would be nice to have a mini can holder located somewhere. So I'd buy one of those, that's my problem with cup holders or the ash tray trick is that it reall doesn't hold those mini cans the right way. Someone said what about smoking and passengers: uhhhh who actually ashes in their ashtray, it's called a window and ash is biodegradable, as for the butt roll out the ember and toss it on the floor and clean it out when u get home... And as for the passenger, seriously if they're too lazy to hold their own drink they can just not ride in my car. |
