I don't even know what's in my ashtray...
I normally go poking through it when I'm stuck in traffic or something, and find something that I didn't even know I lost :-P |

Progress update: I am getting really close to being able to form the actual cup portion of the cup holders. I'm perfecting this first because I'll be able to use it in both the ashtray and center console models. Also I had to make some new frames for holding the plastic while it's in the oven. My old frame was barely holding on there toward the end of the last run of wiper motor covers so it was in need of replacement. I made a pair of new ones from 3/4 MDF so I can be loading one while the other is in the oven. Hopefully it will make production a little faster.
If everything goes well tomorrow I should be able to post a pic of the cup part, but we'll see because the Good Guys Car Show is going on this weekend and I may be going to that. My buddy is putting his Plymouth GTX in so it should be a good time.

ive been thinking about doing this for months. i could easily design a pop in molded plastic cup holder that popped in just like the ash try, print it on my SLA machine, then make a silicone mold for it. Id be able to get 25-50 units out of it depending on the final shape of the part and how well the mold holds up because of it. cost wise, it could be a lot depending on how much the SLA costs and materials. The material alone for the plastic 3d printed part I make the mold from may be a few hundred alone.
i could always make it out of carbon as well...hmmm so if riprodders version doesnt pan out, i can give this a shot if people are interested. If Riprodders works, then his will be the cheapest option since it'll be vac forming. riprodder, if you have any issues with getting the plastic to form, let me know, and Id be happy to trouble shoot it with you. i kinda want your cup holder since it means i dont have to make one and can concentrate on my diffuser design. |

A few things in response to what I've read:
I usually ony buy bottled sodas and drinks if I really do drink in my car, but most of the time I'm busy doing this thing called driving to drink in the car. With that being said I do drink redbull while driving and it would be nice to have a mini can holder located somewhere. So I'd buy one of those, that's my problem with cup holders or the ash tray trick is that it reall doesn't hold those mini cans the right way. Someone said what about smoking and passengers: uhhhh who actually ashes in their ashtray, it's called a window and ash is biodegradable, as for the butt roll out the ember and toss it on the floor and clean it out when u get home... And as for the passenger, seriously if they're too lazy to hold their own drink they can just not ride in my car. |

Thanks for the offer RedSIBarron. I'll hit you up if I run into a snag. Do you work at a machine shop? Just wondering since that cup holder of yours is aluminum and fit's like a glove.
I worked all day and still am not there yet but at least I made more progress. "Make progress everyday" is what I always say. Making these sounds simple but this really takes a lot of work. But I'll pay off in the end cause these are going to be bad-ass!

naw speed, That's really creative. I wouldn't have thought to put one there. You should definitely finish it. Slick that baby up with a skim coat of bondo and put some black texture on it. It'll blend right in. Very trick.

Ah yes, the typical, lets sacrifice the integrity of the seat for an important yet horrifyingly ugly makeshift cup holder. See it all the time bro.

I'm so used to pulling out the ashtray if I get a drink I'm good with that. I like that arm rest dual cup holder but 250 for that is nuts the door panel ones are sick!

Here's a pic of what the "cups" of my cup holders will look like. I just formed them today. These are not the actual parts though. They are actually undersized a little because they are formed over the cups I made that are actual size. Also the finished part will not be made from white plastic. This is just what I'm using to help get my moulds made.
There is still a few back and fourth steps with pulling a mould off of another mould until I get the final mould that I can make parts off of. I'm still working on the framework that will fit into the ash tray and hold this cup. It will probably be at least another week before I can make a finished part.

I'm getting really getting close to having the cup mould finished. I just have to clean it up a bit more. I also got to make the mould for the ash tray insert today and I'm hoping to clean that one up tomorrow along with the cup mould. Then I still have to form a cup and an insert out of the moulds and combine the two into the actual part. Sounds complicated but it's really not that bad, just really tedious. If I can I'll post a pic tomorrow of the parts I make after work.
