I'm considering moving to the Maryville/Knoxville area for a job. What is the car life like around there? Cops/inspection laws/etc, good shops, local-ish events and tracks? East10drift looks promising, are those fairly regular events?

No emission
Several area counties have a wheel tax $30-35 extra when registering ($65 total in Knox county)
ETD had 5 events this year, looking at 10+/- for '13
Police are pretty lax on mechanical defects

Yea the car scene in Knox is ok. It's picking up though. A group called LacedUp has put together a pretty decent meet. Last one had 520+ cars. The next one is on the 17th at West Town Mall and would be a good chance to check out the scene. Like someone else said, the cops are pretty laid back. Just be polite, respectful, and not drive like an idiot and you'll be ok. My 240 is loud as fuh with 5% tint and no emissions and I've yet to be hassled. I've heard Maryville cops are more stern but I've never lived and rarely visited so I can't really say.

Looks good sitting there G! Mine has a blown blower motor, it's seized up...340 total repair cost, but the diag of only $58 is way better than,"Oh it might take an hour or more to troubleshoot it and thats about a hundred or so for troubleshooting" - AiO

When I get the pads from Enjuku, they will set them up, wire wheel the rust off the discs, turn the surfaces, and mount the new pads($45 per wheel) so a total of 339 for new brakes all the way around(Hawk HPS for 139 for all four corners, and the 2 bills for the shop, not too bad). Leaves me just enough of my budget for the RSE ECU

Met up with Shorty this weekend to try to figure out his ride's electrical issue. While there, we put his RSE ECU into my car, and holy smokes what a difference! I just got off the phone with Martin. I should have mine Saturday, maybe Monday latest depending on the shipping.
Next up, Hawk HPS brake pads and refinished discs, then the Injen intake in December
