Engine Choice for my Project Car
I'm building a Lotus Super 7 mod clone, I was gonna put an SR20det into it, but then I started searching around and looking up engine prices. I found that the RB20DET is substantially cheaper and makes just as much if not more power. So my question is which of these engines do you guys think will be better (sound, and unique factor incl.) for my 1300lb project car and why?
Thanks |

This has been talked about time and time again... RB20... PRO- 6 cylinder. sounds goood. price. CON- harder to find replacement parts for, some of the more rare parts are expensive. harder swap/more is involved. SR20... PRO- availability. aftermarket and OEM parts are easier to find. direct drop in swap. saves more gas than an RB. CON- more expensive motorset. JDM tax. only 4 cylinders. edit: i forgot you werent putting it into an s-chassis. so the comments about the swap dont matter.

SR20 all the way...
I would run a lightly modded 300WHP setup which will be plenty fast for that chassis... And very reliable and cheap to repair...

An RB20 is going to weigh much more, and be much longer than an SR20. Iron block vs. aluminum, and the RB is just a really long motor for only 2 L of displacement.
It's going to be the pretty cheap weight reduction when looking at it from that standpoint. |

for a bad ass sound do a vh45de
for performance and light weight, a built up sr22ve would be great.

id be down for that swap in that sorta project, but he already mentioned that he'd lean towards the RB because the SR is more expensive. Ive talked to a guy who does LS1 swaps and the price to do a SR swap is way less than LS1

You might be hard pressed to fit a v8 in a caterham/LoCost. If you can find one, the ecotec LNF engine is a really, really good choice for those cars but and SR would be pretty interesting to see too!

A 5.3 would be pretty affordable, but you still have to toss some mods on it to really get it to wake up. A VH45DE would be a fun choice if you only wanted about 300 rwhp, as the engines are dirt cheap. Not many engine mods available though. |

The OP already made up his mind.
We don't need ANOTHER SR vs. KA vs. RB vs. VG vs. VQ vs. VH vs. LSx vs. Flux Capacitor Thread.
