Question transmission tech question-ka transmission

alright, so me and my friend have taken out my old transmission from my sr20det and i had a ka transmission that needed the sr bellhousing. well, while trying to pry off the bellhousing from the ka transmission, we knocked the tailhousing loose and decided to take it off. we did eventually get the bellhousing off and swap it with the sr. however, we went to put the tailhousing back and and tried shifting the gears to make sure it worked and it would only go into 1st and 2nd. so we took it off and tried again, and again, and again. it would only go into 1st and sometimes 2nd. so, i need to know how to line up the gears with the shifter. any real help is greatly appreciated.

for anyone that wants to know, i figured it out. please understand that i am in no way a mechanic and this just happened to work for me.

ok, with the tailhousing off and the shifter attached, pull the shifter over to the left towards 1st gear but stay in nuetral. so, pretty much the farthest neutral possible. try to keep the shifter in that position while sliding the tail housing on. once you get the housing on, you'll probably have to push and turn the housing to get it to lock in place. with the tailhousing on, try shifting into each gear to make sure you got it right. you'll probably have to use some muscle to get it to move since there should be only a small amount of oil left if any at all. when you get the transmission into each gear, make sure you turn the input shaft and that the output shaft is turning the same way. except for reverse, the shafts should be spinning in opposite directions. make sure you cannot stop the output shaft while spinning the input shaft unless the transmission is in nuetral. if you did everything right, you should be good. just clean the mating surfaces, rtv, and bolt together using a crossing torque pattern (like mounting wheels on a car). put the sensors and everything back in and you should be good. hope this helps
