KA rebuilding shifter; grease?

I'm going to rebuild my stock shifter and I'm wondering if and what grease do I need to use?

Just want to make sure I don't mess up the plastic pieces or mess up the transmission because I used the wrong type of grease or something..

Wait, what?!?! How the fuck do you rebuild a shifter and why the fuck would you need grease for?!?! Are you also planning on refilling your blinker fluid, cuz I think you're low of that too...

the stock shifter has plastic pieces to it and other things.
i'm going to take it all apart and put it back together with new parts.
since they're all moving/rubbing together i would assume there would need to be some form of grease/lubrication applied..

appreciate you being a dick..though it doesnt help. thanks anyways.

Uhhhh, use gear oil because that is what will be splashing up there anyways. Any other grease will just end up getting mixed into gear oil so it would just be a waste of money to go buy.

I agree gear lube, but what's wrong with your shifter are you just bored or does it feel sloppy, do you just miss second a lot?

well, lately, 1st will get jammed and need to be wiggled in or 'reset' by engaging in 3rd > 2nd > then 1st. 2nd will occasionally miss or mildly grind, Reverse sometimes pops out or misses.
and yes there is some free play in the shifter, side to side and a little up and down(very little).

im going to take it out and look at the fluid level. where should the fluid level be at? i feel like it might need some more fluid. when the clutch is depressed, and in neutral, i can hear the whirling/spinning sound..

Wow, you're more clueless than I thought. You press you clutch in and you hear whirling spinning noise? Umm...thats not your tranny, thats your clutch TOB spinning against your clutch pressure plate.

You not being able to get into first, grind or anything else has nothing to do with your shift. Sounds like your synchros are going bad. I wouldnt even bother checking your tranny fluid level, I'd go straight to changing it. Sounds like you've never done it yourself so only god knows how long ago it was replaced.

Do yourself a favor, get some 3 qts of AMSOIL MT-Lube, drain the old fluid and dump all 3 qts in thru the shifter hole and done. Should atleast make your shit shift a lil better if your synchros arent completely trashed.

Yes I'm an ass but you still need to check your blinker fluid level...

i meant 'not pressed in'.. when it's pressed in, i dont hear anything.
and i didn't say i can't get into first..it's just occasionally it doesnt go straight it and i need to 're-guide' it in.

Hence bad synchros, when they are going out that happens. And these cars had some degree of shifter wiggle stock so a rebuild is not going to do much, replacing the bushing on the bottom is about the only thing that can make these better. If you don't want your shifter to wiggle go buy a auto.

+1 on AMSOIL MT

I would get the Syncros checked.. Back when my buddy ran an Integra his gear would pop out sometimes in third. He would run Penzoil Syncro Mesh. That shit ran wonders for his gears (no more pop)

The wiggle doesn't bother me that much, just something i noticed it was doing more. I took a look under the boot and the middle plastic pieces(not the bottom bushing)..has some play in it so i figure i'll just replace that since im taking it out anyways. I'll have the synchros looked at. it's not that bad atm, this morning it seemed perfectly normal, no problems what-so-ever.

yeah your transmission its on its last legs. when i bought my car the shifter flopped like a MoFo but i knew it was most likely missing the shifter bushing. I took the shifter assembly apart while test driving the car with the owner next to me just to confirm my suspicions and i was right.

If adding oil doesnt help just replace the transmission theyre only a couple bills for a used one or a bit more to get it rebuild just to get peace of mind.

MT-90 Redline Synthetic is also GL-4 and recommended for SR20 manual transmissions, and it is usually available at your local Murrays speed and custom
