SR Oil visible before turbo, no shaft play???

So upon checking out my t25 turbo on my new sr, I find a shallow puddle of oil right before the intake of the turbo. I checked the inlet shaft and the outlet and there is no play in the shaftsv. I'm still pretty new to this stuff so if someone could tell me what could be wrong that'd be awesome. image.jpg

Check your turbo oil drain for blockage. I've seen this before on new swaps - clean it up and run the engine to full operating temp to help loosen any gunked up oil in the turbo or lines. Then get the turbo to spin a little by revving hard and check for any fresh oil there.

Good luck!

PS I doubt it is a catch can issue. My catch can stays dry as a bone - if that much oil is coming from your valve cover tee you have a problem, and the rest of the piping before the turbo would be dripping wet with oil. Check to make sure you have the valve cover tee hoses 100% correct. NO BREATHER FILTER, front of tee to rubber turbo inlet tube AFTER the MAFS. The back side of the tee should go down to either the stock oil separator box thing or (if you upgraded the exh manifold) directly into the block nipple.

agree, catch can is not the answer, or even related to this issue.

I've noticed on zilvia you usually have to skip the first 2-5 posts of misinformation to get to someone who actually knows.

Well I just pulled my oil return line and there was no blockage at all, so I just put it back on and cleaned all of the oil out of the intake. The oil was gewwy, does that mean it could be something else?

Well your in that bracket, should he ignore what you said?

But seriously, if he had a properly ran catch can and his vacuum source is from the turbo intake, there is a chance of oil buildup in the turbo, not saying that's his problem. But it's a start

If the turbo was used, pulled and sat for years, gooey oil residue could be no big deal. I've fully resurrected many T25's that were full of gummy oil - some so bad the shaft barely turned.

Clean it out, make sure the oil supply line is not blocked (optional!), idle your engine for a while to circulate hot oil and then check to see if you have any fresh oil in there.

You never ran the turbo? Did you mean new sr, installed and running and now you see it smoking blue smoke, so you took the inlet off and found this,

#2 or did you mean your new SR, just arrived, and happens to have this oil puddle present? the motor isn't running yet. I think this is what you mean, where the first is what people are generally responding to upon finding oil sucked out of their valve covers into the turbo inlet due to poor baffling of the valve cover.

#2 all you can do is clean it out and run it. Who knows how it got there? Maybe someone deliberately poured oil in there, or the motor tipped sideways or upside down at some point.
You would see the problem from the exhaust long before you had that much oil sitting there. Imagine what the inside of your intercooler would look like if you ran it like that, or if it ever got that bad.

Apparently no one is really wrong here.
So it's still up to the op to at least clean it, check the pipes and start it up. Then check everything again.

The gooey oil is not the oil you put in right?

I have a '99 14a (kouki) with a genuine 23k miles and totally stock
and that had a little puddle of oil in the turbo entry
if the intake pipe has the rocker cover pipe routed into it as per OE its normal imo
at the same time I bought the 23k mls car I bought another two @90 and 92k mls
and they were both the same size of puddle, and both stock cars just higher miles
I have had a lot of turbo'd cars (not just nissans) and all had something wet and oily there

I have never ran the engine, it just arrived and it looks like it's been sitting out of a car for a few months. I just dropped it into my car yesterday and haven't gotten far enough to start it yet. Before that, I checked my oil return line and there was no blockage from what I could see. Also, It has an aftermarket exhaust manifold, so the t coming from the valve cover is running straight to the block, the front is running to the intake after the maf.

OK good - sounds like you have it all setup right, checked and cleaned out. My bet is it was just old oil that leaked from the turbo journal bearing area & oil line when the engine tipped to the side a bit. Check it after you get the engine started to make sure it doesn't come back.

You are going to have a lot of dust and greasy fingerprints burn off in the 1st 15 minutes of running so be ready for that too! If it smells like an old electric heater you just pulled out of storage it's probably normal.

Good luck!
