S14 Sunroof Trim On Going Problems

I know that the rubber weather stripping cost $100-110 from Nissan. I am trying to get in touch with someone that can help us out and give a massive discount bc I want to sell this thing for around $200-250 INCLUDING the weather stripping. Right now I am trying to hunt down a 3D printing company to scan this and make a new one for molding bc this fiberglass trim would fall apart in casting.

Yeah I'm fine with the 100 dollar weatherstripping. Oem Nissan parts are awesome. Quality is suburb.

Im trying to gauge the correct price point for this. Would $250 be too much for this kit? Kit would include new trim, weatherstripping and adhesive with instructions

Feel free to chime in. i am just a guy trying to help our the community. Yes I will make some money off this but ultimately I just want this freaking problem solved!!!

Yes I am sure I will. I am really trying to just get a feel for what everyone is comfortable with as far as a price tag for a kit. So maybe $150-175 for trim and adhesive only

Well sat down and had a brain storming idea. I am currently in talks with some 3D printing companies to see about getting this thing scanned. Because of its size, that is my current hold up. Also, the trim piece has a natural bow/arch to it so I cant just design a flat trim piece or else it would not have a true fit to the glass.

I am staying on top of this in my free time out side of work so just bear with me.

Update........I dropped off the trim piece with a engineer that is going to create a rough draft digitally so I can submit it to different companies for rough estimate quotes for production. This will give me a round about idea of what it will cost to make,mold and ship. If all goes well, then I will commission the engineer to make a full on model for prototyping and testing.

Hang in there people. We have the technology, just need time and money.

I am having a guy here locally create a solid model in CAD and am in talks with Protolab in MN. Once I get the completed CAD, I am sending it off for quoting. Protolab will then create a prototype and send it back to me for test fitting and revisions. ONce I give them the green light, they said they will take 25% off the injection mold to retain my business. I will email you the file as well for quoting. Thanks for the help!!!

One thing I am having trouble finding is how many 95-98's were produced with a sunroof. I can find productions numbers for the # of cars made for America but not how many came with sunroofs. Any info you can find would be great.

Why would you need that number? Shouldn't your production count be based on how many people want/need it rather than the total number of sun roof cars?

The reason I need/want that number is to gauge what the maximum number is. Then do some rough math to guesstimate how many I will ultimately make. Let's say the total number is 10000. So in 20 years let's say there are only 1000 still on the road that have sunroofs. I could then let the company making them know how many to produce. There is a setup fee everytime I run a batch. I'm just looking for a numerical starting point.

The only people that currently know about this are the ones involved in this thread. So making 20 is a waste of money given the setup fee. I know there are probably 500-1000 poeple that actually need this part. Once the word gets out that these things exist, then I can cater to the individual but right now I'm thinking about the initial production run to cut down on cost which equals lower cost to the individual.

So while I'm at my lowest, let me ask this question.
I took a look at my sunroof and saw two different parts around the glass. I can't really explain it, but I'll try.

There is a thick piece around the glass itself and an additional small rubber piece surrounding that. My question is:
1. Are those 'two' pieces one or are they separate?
2. If they are separate, which one are you making?

There is a small gap at the back of the small rubber piece in my sunroof, is that normal?

The thick, flat piece that goes around the glass is the trim piece that I am trying to recreate. The other piece is the rubber weather stripping.

They are separate. The trim piece was never made available for sale as it came as a complete assy with the sunroof. The weather stripping is still sold today. The small gap is normal as that is where the weather stripping begins and ends.

I hope you have an NDA in place with anyone you send that CAD file for quoting. A run of 500-1000 is probably a bit ambitious at this phase. You'll end up sitting on inventory for a long time trying to sell them, even worse is if one of the copy-cats comes out of the woodworks. A fairly small initial run could be helpful to gauge interest and ease of installation and any revisions necessary.

If you plan to sell these in large quantities, then you're going to need to vendors on board and some advertising. Basically, you'll have better luck selling a lot of these if it's available on rockauto, frsport, Courtesy Nissan, and any other vendor that sells replacement parts.

I have a spare sunroof with broken trim that I can help test fit with.

Words of wisdom. The guy I have doing the CAD and the company all have NDA. I own the designs and mold but they own the process of how it is made (if I understood them correctly). Trying to figure out how many to make at first is kind of a guessing game at this point. I would say I could probably sell 100-200 which is I think a reasonable start. I have been in contact with some of the bigger companies to gauge interest but they want to see the final product before we talk numbers. I will probably just end up going through one or two companies due to the low amount of trims needed.

The other question is concerning price wars.
If there are three places selling the same product, the cheaper will initially get most of the sales, but when they run out, the other 'stores/companies' could start charging what they want.

I really hope this doesn't happen, but business is business I guess.
