C63 AMG Benz are almost reasonably priced now. The last big V8's before everyone went to forced induction. Damn they sound sweet.

Sooo, I started driving a RUF 3400S in Gran Turismo because of this thread. Dear god. Can't believe how badly it embarasses turbo MR2's. Glad this thread happened before I bought an SW20 in real life.

That's a complete spyder conversion. That's a seriously huge fiberglass piece that replaces the rear deck and trunk, plus a new top assembly etc. Another thing to remember is most of these companies are the original designers, so for a fair price comparison you should look at Amuse, C-west, Du Luck etc for pricing. Import owners are spoiled by all the cheap replica companies and out ~$300 bumpers. Another place to look is also for early 996 bumpers and their varrients as they will work as well. |

Everything I've seen says, yeah, the dimensions are right so getting it to fit isn't the problem. But wiring it up is still mystifying most ppl. You can't run either the Porsche or Audi ECU, so say goodbye to a working gauge cluster and other niceties. And since the 4.2L is a pretty complex motor, most doubt that megasquirt will be able to operate it fully, causing a big loss in power. Seems a lot like the early issues we encountered trying to run VQ engines in 240's. I want the 4.2L 6spd 986 idea to work, but I can't find any examples of anyone getting it done...

Ahhh, cool. Thanks. I guess I kinda got the impression that this was a fairly common swap for the 986 & I was a bit surprised to find only one example of it being done. Everything about it is one off & custom. So that's something to consider if someone is expecting it to be as simple as an SR swap. I think I'd hold off until there's more documentation & more of them running around. I don't like being a guinea pig.

What I've noticed about that however is the cost of long-blocks have come down quite a bit from wrecked cars. $2-3k gets you a new engine. Most guys are content to just spend the $2k and get it running again. The "SR Plug-N-Play" swap are the 3.2/3.4 engines. Those go for 6-8k I believe and add 50-100hp. |

Thank you good sir. Ironically enough I started with VWs years ago. A MKIII and then a MKIV. I set out wanting a BMW but a clean E36 back then was $12-15k so I settled for a $5k 57k mile MK3 Golf. At the time I thought both cars where reliability nightmares. I know now that was just because I was a dumb kid. Shit happens, you just need to learn to fix it. |
