LS3 S13 Build Inspired by Broadfield and Pstl_Pete's Builds

After sitting like this for the last four years, I started following Pstl_Pete's modified magazine articles and then also found Broadfield's build thread here on Zilvia and got the desire and inspiration to rebuild the car and start enjoying it again. The reason it had sat there for so long, was due to many things in life, but the smog and registration issues every year became too much of an issue to deal with. Pstl_Pete showed an easy way to get a hassle free smog legal solution, so I started gathering info and parts a few months ago.

Thank goodness the lift still worked as I installed the lift, put the S13 on it and raised it and did not touch it till this day

wow nice car bro.seeing as how clean that sr setup was i can tell this build is gonna be on the same level as pstl_pete and broadfields. im planning on ditching my ka-t setup and going ls3 also.but man is this swap adding up to be pretty expensive.especially the way i want it.good luck with the build and can't wait to see the progress.

What's that you have in your garage? A Nissan, Nissan, and a Nissan? This I like

Hope to see a sweet build! Good luck!

My build will be nearer to pstl_pete's. I just don't have the skills nor patience to take it to Broadfield's level. Reading all his posts has been very inspirational as well as educational. I am going to try to do some interior work based on his write-ups.

I hope to be on the road in the next few months as I want to hit the track next summer. That's my GTR and my Z32 TT under the cover.

Got a new T56 Magnum for a good price from a local guy here in NorCal.

I have to figure out what shifter to run as the T56 Magnum shifter sits 4" forward of a normal T56. Maybe a Sikky or one that the guy who sold me my transmission is using in his FD.

Got the LS3 Erod on the engine stand.

Untitled by gnakata2007, on Flickr[/IMG]

Flipped the fuel rail 180 degrees so that the fuel line has a straighter shot to the fuel rail. The guys at Fueled Racing suggested this for their kit.

Using the same CTS-V accessory setup as Pstl_pete

Engine harness and fuse box that comes with the E-rod crate motor. Everything is labeled for each connector.

One wire for the fuel pump and one for the electric fans. That bulkhead connector is to integrate into the chassis harness.

Bulkhead connector pinout.

New 17" shoes for my baby. Very conservative size and fitment.

One of my inspirations for this new build

Yes a fun hassle free CARB legal street car that I can drive comfortably to work a couple times a week and then throw some track tires on and do a couple of track days per year.

I like variety and like to drive all my cars on a regular basis throughout the week. I am installing AC this time and might even install some sounds this time.

I am following Pstl_pete with a KW suspension setup. The only downside is that KW would not make a set of rears with the Z32 fork to attach to my Z32 rear knuckles, so I am going back to S13 rear knuckles. This time I am adding SPL front ball joints to square up the front suspension geometry.

I tried working with Fueled Racing on coming up with a service where they would modify the Erod cats or build an adapter mid pipe to go from the exhaust manifolds to the cats. Fueled is developing an exhaust system to bolt up to their swap kits and we were hoping to adapt the Erod to their exhaust system for a truly bolt together system. That fell through so I am trying to figure out how to proceed on the exhaust system.

I am going with a Q45 3.54 rear diff that my friend had sitting in his backyard.

I actually bought the Hooker Headers engine and tranny mounting kit, but changed my mind and now have the full Fueled Racing kit. So far I am really impressed with the well thoughtout kit. Everything seems to be a plug and play bolt on kit. They even will build AC lines, but only if you buy their kit as the lines are based on using their kit. With this kit, you can use your existing front sway bar and don't have to modify (hammer) your transmission tunnel. The fuel lines are plug and play from the tank to the fuel rail and come with the Corvette fuel pressure regulator/filter that is required to pass CARB.

This is going to be a great build. You should look into the PBM rear knuckles. They have all heim joints instead of rubber.

That sounds like a great deal. It's definitely nice to have a fun street car that is track-capable and still legal to drive on the streets. I live in Texas, but dealing with engine setups that don't pass inspection is a real pain in the arse.

I've been looking to do the 1UZ swap myself but more and more after watching you guys (Pstl_Pete and Broadfield) really makes me want to reconsider and just go LSX. It's great to hear you will be doing a full AC install, that ought to be a real nice addition and well worth the added effort!

Good luck with the exhaust issue, I'm sure you'll get it sorted out beautifully! I've also been thinking about going with KW's; I hear nothing but great things from their performance on the track while still maintaining adequate comfort on the street.

A little update from today.

I had new boots installed on these Z32TT and Q45 axles for my Q45 diff swap. I made a mistake last time when I first built the car. I just installed the axles and after a few thousand miles, the boots broke and there was grease all over the underside of my my then recently cleaned and painted chassis.

Moroso pan and modified oil pickup from the Fueled Racing swap kit

Moroso oil pan from Fueled Racing Kit

Moroso oil pan baffle doors

Here is a comparison shot of the stock versus modified Moroso oil pickup

Stock vs Moroso modified oil pick up

Moroso oil pickup installed

Modified Moroso oil pickup installed

Oil pan installed and buttoned up

Installed Moroso oil pan

Motor mounts waiting to be installed

Fueled Racing adds a nice touch by putting labels or reminders on all the parts to make sure they are installed correctly. These are some reminders on the bottom of the motor mounts. All the fuel and oil lines have labels on the connectors to make sure they are installed correctly.

Passenger side motor mount

I had to remove the stock manifolds to install the motor mounts. I also ended up reversing the nut and bolt on the motor mount to be able to pull out the bolt later if needed while in the car.

Passenger side motor mount

Close fit between the motor mount and manifold exhaust flange on the passenger side. I actually had to do some minor grinding of the manifold and motor mount on the driver side. Nothing major.

Tight fit of motor mount on passenger side

Oil pan and motor mounts installed.

Motor mounts and oil pan installed

A few weeks ago, I found this 240 in the junkyard and removed the entire HVAC system so I can install in my car. I literally took everything against the interior firewall except for the steering column.
