Starter Surge?????

Alright so last weekend my car all of a sudden started acting funny, only when the clutch was all the way in it could sound like metal to metal grinding and while shifting, my gauges would reset itself and my headlights would turn on and off real quick. I assumed it was a TOB so I let my car sit for 2 days while I did some research, today when i started up my car the metal to metal grinding noise is gone, instead i hear a starter surge whenever the clutch is all the way down BUT it only happens when my headlights are on. If they're off car is perfectly fine and even if theyre in the middle mode when the dash lights up it runs perfectly fine (had a brain fart.) The alternator belt is tight and there are no sparks coming from the starter when we had the clutch all the way down to make it surge. Could it be a bad starter? Mechanical problem? Electrical problem? Totally clueless =/
