Hi I have a 1996 240sx and it’s an automatic and when putting in drive or reverse the car just revs as if it’s in neautral. After a few minutes if I put it in “ 1” it will roll and then I can slip it in drive and it will move. Can anyone help me figure out what the issue is or is anyone familiar with this?

Your transmission is fucked. Need to rebuild it/replace it

What does it feel like? Does it "work", or just "move"? Does it slip? Does it shift on it's own? Is their fluid in it? Are there puddles under it? Did it ever work? Did it change all at once? Do you feel the detents in the shifter, and do they seem to be in the right places?

You should have asked yourself all these things, and answered them all in considerable detail, if you want useful help.
