For those who have completed z33 trans swap

Im looking for a bit of help / experience.

I have and sr20 and i have swaped on the z33 / 350z transmission in a s13. The trans works great as far as shifting and taking a beating. However im having problems with severe noise and vibrations. Im looking to see if others are getting the same noise, particularly with a twin disc as im not sure if the noise is being created by harmics between the clutch/ flywheel and trans. The noise is very loud and sounds like when you have the car in to low of a gear and you try to accelerate, sort of a gear chatter noise. It happens when accelerating at 3k and below and also during decel at around 3k and below. The vibration follows the noise but is also steady without the noise and is particularly bad around 3k. Along with vibrating the car it also vibrates the shifter. So bad that ive just about bruised my hand after a long drive.

The car has nismo mounts and the stock 350z trans mont. I had a solid trans mount but i took it out because i thought it was causing the noise.

Possibly its an issue with the input shaft being slightly miss-aligned?

All the bolts on the plate and housing tight?

I havent pulled the trans yet but they were all torqued to spec when I installed everything. I was wondering something along the same line, maybe a really bad input shaft bearing?

or you mean bellhousing, yes they are all 100% tight, I guess it could be a problem with the adapter plate...

Can it be an unbalanced driveshaft? Also, what gear oil are you running? My RB25 tranny is chattery/noisy as hell, seems to quieten down with Amsoil MTL.

The driveshaft is a brand new shaftmasters so i hope not lol.

Im using redline fluid that all the z guys run. I could try a new fluid although i dont know if that would help with the vibration

Did you use George's adapter plate or the Collins plate?

You can narrow it down if it is in the clutch or the driveshaft/trans by pushing in the clutch pedal while driving... If the vibration continues after your rpms drop, it is in your driveshaft or your transmission.... If it goes away, it is in your clutch.

I'm not sure what part causes it, but Z33s are notorious for crazy clutch chatter with lightweight flywheels.

I don't think George's kits were designed for twin plates, Iirc he said they only tested out a couple......that might be your problem....I am going the jwt 350z clutch combo route here in a few weeks, I will let u know how it turns out

Sorry to revive an older thread...

I just had a new z33 installed with new twin disk os giken and my mechanic was telling me the vibration/whining sounded as loud as a train before putting me on solid mounts....

Also using George's adapter..

I still get super loud vibrations on acceleration and I am hoping sometime in the near future, changing one of the mounts will make the noise completely go away....

Did your situation change at all within these 2 years?

I know the z trans are really noisy, even with everything aligned and functioning correctly, but only people I've seen with vibration concerns are running twin disc setups. Unfortunately I'm waiting for the Mazworx sr-vq bellhousing before I do my trans swap, not fully trusting the adapter plates.

After playing around with another trans I have found it to be related to the large gears and faulty input shaft bearings. The newer cd009 trans use a smaller bearing which means smaller but more ball bearings. This equals less play in the bearing. I have remedied most of but not fixed the problem completely buy replacing the bearing with a new one. I want to eventually get a cd009 bearing installed by using a spacer sleeve in the bell housing.

Also Im using a solid poly mount which will def make more noise but I rip apart any other kind of mount from launching my car.

If anybody else is having this issue, check out my thread. I haven't fixed the issue either, but I've tried just about everything, aside from going to the smaller input shaft bearing in the newer trans like the OP is suggesting. You may get some ideas of what to rule out from my thread.

I researched this to see if anyone has and didn't come up with anything. What I did find is you would likely need to space the z33 trans back quite a bit as the dual mass flywheel is considerably thicker than a single mass flywheel. This could mean even more shifter placement issues and the need for a new driveshaft.

That being said I think it would solve this problem.
