Ball bearing or not??

Would like to know if this turbo looks like journal or ball bearing. Got it with the swap and need to know what restrictor i need.

Only marks i see





Hot side was coated do can hardly see the brand Precision on it. Anyway to tell w/o looking at tags?. Compressir housing is an polished e housing so no tags in there either.

tags on center housing if it is garrett unit. Shine the light at oil drain port, if it's shiny its ballbearing.

You don't need a restrictor if you have a large enough drain... -10AN or bigger will allow you to run no restrictor. If anything go for the standard precision restrictor.

after watching the video you posted with how quickly it stops spinning after you let go it looks to be a journal bearing turbo. a ball bearing would spin for longer.

Thats the only thing makes me think is journal but if u look at the shaft is like chrome and shiny. I have a journal one and it looks like bronze color. Does it matter?

I have a standar restrictor on it but slso have a .06. Is there any link i can confirm that i can use a standard one with the large -10an drain?

easy sign would be the number of bolts on the rear housing, im sure a BB has 6 and a Journal has 4-but I might be wrong though :/

Its 5 bolt t3 ford style . Can i just run a bb restrictor on it? What can happen when running a bb restrictor in a journal turbo?

In that case without any viable markings it will be just about impossible to tell unless you tear the whole thing apart. But based on the resistance it had in your video I would say its Journal bearing but that's still just a guess.

This is my old turbo. I think u can tell looks like bronze


So i will take like it is ball bearing. Now anybody else to confirm if im using -10an drain line i still need a restrictor or no? I have a .06 journal restrictor on it right now. I would hate to blow the seals on thia thing

turbo

If the oil feed (pressure) port has threads to not only install a fitting but also threads inside the hole where oil goes through, then it is ball bearing. It's kinda hard to explain, but if you take a close-up detailed pic of the oil feed port, I can tell you if it's BB or not. The reason for the fine threads inside the oil feed hole is so you can install a small bolt, and remove that pin using a slide hammer. This is how you disassemble BB turbos without damaging the bearings. We do it everyday... It's called the location pin. It pins the outer race or outer shell of the ball bearing unit in place. Let me know if that makes sense.

Sorry foe the delay. Its been a while but here is the picture. If I understood what u said, its ball bearing. Here is a picture of the oil feed. U can see the hole has threads in it. Please confirm it to be 100%sure
