I was looking at auction pictures and one thing started to bother me.

A hole, or a slot, for some device? Right next to the steering wheel.

What used to fit in there? I saw a small screen stuck in there for some cars but what is it?

Never seen anything fitted there from the factory. Presumably it's to store change or could be for keeping parking passes or toll road passes. I know a bunch of japanese cars have special holders or compartments specifically to fit tickets/passes in.

No doubt someone has shoved some electronic gadget in there at some point, just like they do the same thing sticking guages in the air vents and such.
