The last RB i saw had its cylinders full of water and rust. They are a good starting point and thats it. Do not expect to just swap them and be done with them.

I've been fairly lucky with mine, but we've also been picky, and the last one my brother and I got for his frontier, the importer fired it up for us before we bought it. they had a fuel pump in a bucket, and we did a compression test and then ran the engine just to make sure. granted, not everyone has the opportunity to visit their importer in person, but there are still good engines available.
I definitely agree that it is WISE to assume that the engine you're getting will need a refresh. New water pump, bearings, even rings and head gasket/head studs aren't bad ideas to toss in.
