The BOV is an accessory, not a requisite of function. Theoretically it is a device to extend the turbocharger's longevity. In my eyes, the modern consensus is that running one isn't really necessary. I'd only use one if I wanted to daily my SR and get like 100,000+ miles out of a turbo.
