I've done the above before installing the timing belt cover and crank pulley because I want to see if the dots and lines line up. When doing this, the dots on both cams and the crank match up after rotating the crank. Also, all line marks on both cams and the crank line up. Is this right?

Use the LINE not the dot and rotate the vvti gear all the way clockwise..I did this and got my information from two professional 2jz builders/tuners that have 1000+ hp 2jz engines that they built themselves.
