View Full Version : * Redtop SR20DET Problems, please help out...

Hey guy's, i've got a redtop in my 90' hatch, with around 45K miles on the engine. Upgrades are, fmic, blitz bov, replaced t25 with a newer one, full exhaust. Boosting 10PSI.

Just a few days ago I have driving a little hard hitting about 80-90MPH in it, then suddenly it sounded like i was on 2-3 cylinders, and there was tons of smoke from my rear view mirror, a friend was behind me most of the time, and he said most if it is not even coming out of my exhaust...

So I pulled over, and popped open my hood, I saw the dip stick popped out, so I was assuming is was a bad pvc valve to build that pressure to make all the oil come out of the dip stick hole. Then I assumed all that smoke was from all the oil splashing onto the turbo/engine...

Then When I got home, gave it a compression check, from 1-4 cylinders:

120

This is when the engine is COLD. Please anyone put some input on this thread, I can use all the help... Im leaning towards the rings maybe? But come on, zero compression? lol... Let me know, thanks!

you might blew out the head gasket or blew a piston ring only way to really tell is to pull off the head 45k you put on it or thats what they said it had most importers dont have a clue on the mileage on the engine and lie about it

My SR had the same symptoms. I blew a hole in a piston. Like andrewmp6 said there is really no way of telling unless you pull the head. Did you do a leakdown?

Nope, didn't do a leak down test yet, will make a tester soon. So basically im leaning towards busted internals instead of a headgasket blowing... What did you do after you found out you had a hole in one of your pistons? And what do you think that happened in the first place?

I rebuilt the engine. All new pistons and rings. I think the reason it went was because of detonation. Before i had a boost gauge i had some vacuum lines messed up so the car was running at 16-17 psi with everything stock and that was for about 2 months. That was my reason. The thing that gets me on yours though is that your only running 10psi. What kind of fuel pump are you running?

255lph pump... i know its odd for me to have this problem...did you do the rebuild yourself?

yes i did but i ran into other engine problems so i just got another one cause i was sick of it always breaking. It actually wasn't that hard. Did it in a weekend.
