but my real question is: is the houseing breaking like that indacating another problem? that and now that it is all togather and works doesn't it look like there should be a 3rd piece that goes in fornt of the opening? and if my car is starting right now would grinded up shunks of that piece kill the engine? or just the starter? any way to get those pices out short of dissambeling the engine/trans? or would the pieces just kill the new starter (oh well has autozone warrenty and it is the 3rd time i have re-installed the starter in a month (first 1st was going bad, used replacement had bad sylanoid witch i had to remove and switch out silinoids for 2nd install. now this one in the lot) just looking for ideas, motor should be out of the car in a month or two so should i worry too mutch?

First of all.

NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Buy an alternator/starter from kragen/autozone/pepboys/local cheap franchise shop.
Go to a parts house where shops buy their parts from. If you don't know of any, ask around. Yes, they do fail every now and then, but not as bad as kargens does.

Secondly, that's not the first time I've seen that happen.. especially with cheap brand parts.

At this point, just reinstall it and start it up, see if there's any abnormal noise. If there is, you can tremovethe bell housing cover. It's been a few months since I've done it, but it's not that hard.

Lastly, WTF are you doing under your car with a freaking scissor jack? Get a REAL jack + jack stands. If you want to live long.

there are two jack stands under there, just used the scissors to put them under there. I know better than to work under a car the doesn't have jack stands. since they are black you really can't see them at night. and as far as a parts house goes, not too many in SD that i know of, and this was the only starter around here that was in stock. What are some good places for OEM replacements besides the factory? every other parts place was 3+ days out. stupid starter was $199 though. thought cheap places were suppposed to have cheap parts.

Thanks for the help on the bell houseing question. so far the only thing wrong is the battery is shot, but going to take it and get a good charge on it today and if it doesn't take oh well i'll just have to get in toutch with optima about a bad battery.
