Mounting a Stretched Tire!?

So I tried putting on a 225/45/17 onto a 9" rim today with no success. We got the tire on but the area around the bead never locked so whenever we tried filling it with air, it just leaked out and would never "pop". Does it require a special machine? I was told by someone that there is a special air machine that basically forces the air in and stretched out the tire. Suggestions?

It shouldn't be too hard to stretch a 225 onto a 9" rim...

hit the center on the tread with a heavy rubber mallet while you fill it with air. thats always worked for us.

what tire are you doing this on?
I'm running 225/45/17 on my 9 inch wide rim. installed it like any normal tire.
pop it on, filled it with air and the beads locked, then a loud pop. 38psi, balance, then mounted on car.
some tires dont have flex enough walls and you might need to make it fit somehow.

Depends what tire. You can use a cheetah bead setter to pop on the tire. Lift up the tire on the top bead and pump the air with the tool from the bottom. The tire should set the bead on the bottom. You can leave it out in the sun to stretch, but my shop never does.

Buy a tire ring if you plan on doing this alot. but 225.45.17 on 9 shouldnt be an issue. Try using shop air directly to the air compressor instead of using the lil air chuck o nthe tire machine. Sometimes you gotta put 50+ PSI in some to get bead to seat. Or just fill with like 50psi and walk away for a bit..... then itll pop out after time.

I'm using a Continental Contact Sport. We would try lifting it up but the air would all leak out! We couldn't get the beads locked on the rim because whenever we tried filling it with air, the air leaked all out!

Half of what has been said so far is silly. a 225 on a 9'' rim isnt even that bad of a stretch. I bet the shop your working in has a small compressor though. What you need to do is take the valve core out, and buy this silly little barrel dealy. I cant recall the name but its just a small air container with a standard schrader valve and a switch valve. You fill that thing up to about 80psi, put the hose on the valve, and then open that baby up fast. Rush of air goes into the tire setting the bead. Please tell me you allready tried taking the core out though, and lubed the living shit out of the bead. Sorry to ask but some people dont know what they are doing really.

Like drift into a curb said, if the compressor you have doesn't have the power, get a cheetah.

Hmmm you can also take out the valve needle out and hook up the air that way. Then lift the tire on the top bead of the rim. When you inflate it, it'll drop down and pop into place. Seems like you're lifting up while inflating which won't work cuz it just sits there and leaks. If all else fails, take it to a low rider shop. Those guys will do it all.

basically we tried a few different ways. We took the needle out, pop the tire into place and then lifted onto the top and filled. We held the tire there while it inflated, but it seems it would pop out of place or air would leak and not allow enough pressure to build.

What I'm basically trying to figure out is how you guys got the sidewall to pop into place. I can life the rim to the top bead, but when I tried filling it with air, there's a big gap on the bottom bead between the rim and tire which leaks all the air out before it can pressurize and pop.

Basically the problem is you arent getting enough air in there fast enough to set the bead. You need to get some sort of equipment that allows you to get more air in faster

3mm stretch is not that hard. How many tires have you installed?

sorry to say guys but a cheetah is the LEAST practical solution for any tire stretch... they cost $400+ and are bulky, hard to handle, use, store, etc.

Get a TIRE RING like i said before. Ive stretched so many damn tires now its not funny. anything from 215.40.18 on 9.5" wide to 205.50.15 on 9" wide to 215.45.17 on 10" wide.

Are you kidding me? Cheetahs are not hard to use. It should take less than a minute and sits in the corner of the room. I suppose cost might be a problem though. You might as well say ringS though. Different strokes for different folks.

didnt mean to say hard to use, but bulky... and more of a pain then a tire ring that will only cost $35.00 as apposed to $400+ for cheetah.... but again... different strokes for different folks.
