Okay before anybody flames me, i already did a search but i didnt really get a detailed answer, just threads about how often to change oil, and i change oil every 3000...
Okay so when i got my 91 240 i ran seafoam through the brake booster vacum line and some in the motor oil just to clean everything out... then i flushed the oil out with 1 quart Castrol GTX 10-30, and put new bosch platinium sparkplugs, was short on $ at the time to get NGKs... currently im running just the castrol gtx 10-30, then planning on going syntec next oil change, then go full synthetic after that. Everbody is telling me to use 20-50 but for some reason that seems to thick to me? Should i just stick with 10-30? the motor has about 126k miles...
Should i even switch over to syntec or synthetic? pro's, cons?
Thanks... :hsdance:

DO IT.

Synthetic deals with heat MUCH better then fossils.
i second the 15w50

I suggest being careful because of the hydralic lifters, they usually work best with about a 5w-30 oil. Other than that I would like to hear how other weights of oil are working in your engine if you are using them.

my uncle's a mechanic and all of our our cars he's changed to 20w50. thicker viscocity for older engines cuz the seals are older. Also, if you look at the manual, depending on your ambient temperature where you live, you should change your oil to that. LA weather never goes under 0 and goes above 100 sometimes so 20w50 is actually recommended for it.

I've never used synthetic because i thought it wasn't useful to blow on a stock motor. Please prove me wrong, i've always been looking for a reason to switch.

cost isnt that much
20 bucks for all the oils
who cares. its nothing. its worth the change, atleast i think so.

Synthetic is far more superior due to many many reasons, it is however not good for some conditons. Search for The Motor Oil Bible and that will explain to you why.

Cause people are ignorant in thier ways you have to read it and the info backing it up...

" And secondly, I hope that you'll allow me to explain why I believe that a premium synthetic oil CAN last for 20,000 miles or more."

ummm....
is this guy serious?

is this true? or is this guy just :loco:

you got bosch platinums because of the cost? NGK coppers are half the price of anything platinum.

If your engine is running right, not consuming or leaking any oil then I would not run any 20w50 or 15w50. If the majority of your driving is on the street then read the owners manual, the recommended weight is 5w30.

A slightly heavier oil like a 10w40 maybe but you're fine with your 10w30 as well.

Stuff like 20w50 is if you're constantly doing laps at the race track, not for most motors that have no problems and driven on the street. Running too heavy an oil causes heat build up and bad gas mileage because the engine has to work harder to pump the thick stuff.

As for synthetic, I always run it over conventional oil, if your car leaks or has problems with synthetic, the motor needs fixing, not patched with heavier oil.

Read the oil message forums. These guys are hardcore motor oil freaks.

Personally I run a 5w40 synthetic, excellent cold start protection, fast turbo spool and 40 weight protection when hot.

i was going to get the NGK coppers... but at the time at pepboys all they had were the $6 a pice NGKs or Bosch or some cheap ass Autolite... and bein at the time i could only afford the Bosch Platinium for $1.99 a piece... and isnt platinium better than copper anyways?

Talking about motor oil got me looking around the web and I found out Red Line started making a 5w40 now. Just ordered myself some. :)

i run 15W-40 Royal Purple. Because the cold vicosity is too high, i'm always extra careful not to rev high or drive hard until the temp is up ( and the lifter noise goes away :p)

I just use 10w30. I plan on installing a oil cooler soon as well so that will help a bit. It really doesnt matter that much what oil you use as long as it is synthetic and you change it regularly. Synthetic oil has better detergents and that help keep your engine super clean and nice.

I run 5w30 Royal Purple but it just got warm here 2 days ago from like 30 to 75 degrees now so yeah depends on the temperatures the engines going to be at. I love this oil for some reason it just feels good.

well pepboys is ripping you, i get NGK coppers for $1.69 a peice. Platinum is just a gimmick, it doesn't even conduct electricity that well compared to copper.

run lucas if u wanna blow your motor, you ever see how much that shit foams? no foaming agents, it makes a dieing engine last longer due to its thick ass nature and some of its decent qualities, but doesnt do so hot on a good motor though, especailly at high rpms.

I'm tottally against that shit. If you want your engine to last a long time, change the oil regularly. Lucas is for half assed people who go 5k oil changes then there motor is fucked so they try and save it. It works to a degree but its still half assed

On a side note, a lot of motor oil guys swear by Auto-rx http://www.auto-rx.com/

Someone did an independent test on an 240sx and it had some dramatic results:

Wow, that's very impressive....anyone else care to try that out? My valvetrain does not look as horrid....and I'm using Mobil 1 5w30.
