Tranny Fluid Question

I was wondering if any fellow automatic owners have any experience with synthetic ATF like royal purple. I have actually kind of grown to like the automatic,  but the way it shifts really bothers me.  it is somewhat unpredictable and jerky at low speed, and seems sloppy, and like it is working way too hard when it shifts at high rpm.   will good synthetic tranny fluid help at all with regard to shifting characteristics?   My manual says to use Nissan matic D trans fluid or equivalent,  what is equivalent?  Dexron?? or what.. I don't want to have to buy tranny fluid from nissan.  What do you folks use?

Courtsey Nissan recommends Redline D-4. I have used it since upgrading my automatic with a valvebody mod and higher stall torque converter and have not had any problems. Have you changed the oil and tranmission filter? You may have a partially clogged filter. Just a thought...

I have a auto 240sx.  It has 89,000 and i don't think the previous owner every changed the trans fluid.  Is safe to do so?  One mechanic said it wasn't.  What is everyones view on this?

I used to have an automatic, and i junked that thing after about a month. One thing if you really want to keep it is you can unhook the pressure regulator that goes to the trans and it will make it way faster on shifting(way harder, but faster). Other than that i would just suggest swapping to a stick shift. It made a huge difference in performance.

Change the fluid, and put in a new Transmission filter.  Thats basic preventative maintainance.  The Redline tranny fluid is some of the best.  Highly recommended.  Should definately help it shift smoother.
I did what what macrocosm said about the shift regulator thing..  and it's not worth it.  The car doesn't go any faster, it just shifts harder, and is annoying when your going slow.  It also caused some weird noises in my drivetrain that didn't go away after I plugged it back up.  I do NOT recommend this mod.

Word of advice.  Stand clear of ATF Synthetic blends. I talked to a NISSAN maintance center, and before I went through with switching he told me that it will make the shifting feel harsh, and feel slippy.  What "slippy" ment I m not sure, but I'm pretty sure he was trying to say was your tranny will not feel like its shifting timely.  The tranny needs SOME thinkness to the fluid.

So, everyone says REDLINE, go redline.  Best bet.

Where and WHAT is this shift regulator, my car changes shifts real hard, i just baught it, i think the guy had it off, how can i put it back on?

Well the usual way it's cut off is by disconnecting the plug above the driverside front fender well. under the hood above the ignition coil.
