I'd say you're right on the money. The E34 BMW M5 had a setup like that.

Yeah, BMW uses the same thing to cool brakes on some of their racecars.

Here is a M1 racer that I saw in the BMW museum last summer:

and here are the cooling plates covering mesh wheels that some of you JDM whores would drool all over:

Although, considering the car in your pictures you asked about, I would assume they are for looks/attention/uniqueness

Eliminates cross flow buffering from the air going past the car.

How much does a setup like that cost anyway?

Thats a mean set of diffusers on the back of that R34.....

The M1 wheel cards were for aero more than anything. The slots are just to provide better cooling than having no slots. These covers from the Super Delta Grp. A Integrale were solely for cooling as water cooled calipers were not yet developed.

I went to this guys house while working at a race at mosport this year. He had about 10 engines worth of parts for M1 procar and 3.0/3.5CSL motors and the original BASF PROCAR. Very awesome magnesium and titanium parts from the mid 70's to mid 80's and close to 150bhp per liter NA.

wouldn't having brake cooling ducts in the front aero be more effective instead of having a bit more unsprung weight???
